About this Plan

Bernard 260. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 27 in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Steve and Mary, I was browsing aircraft 3 views a few days ago and came across the Bernard 260 and was immediately taken by the shape of the vertical stabilizer. I don't know why but that just jumped out at me. So I thought I'd check to see if there were any plans on the net. I only found one in my initial search so there may be more. I like the size of a 27 inch span model so I set out to draw this one. I like the Rees sliced wing construction and often use it in my plans. Mike Stuart has a great tutorial on his site showing this technique in great detail. Under his techniques section, here's a link: http://www.ffscale.co.uk/rees.htm

I just completed this plan July 2, 2024. I think this might make a fun flyer. There were several prototypes and the original was an open cockpit with a nose that was modified from the streamlined 260 C1 with an enclose cockpit canopy to the squared off nose radiator and open cockpit because it was thought the open canopy allowed better view to the rear. But as I said it was the vertical stab that sold this model to me. I like to build a fuller vertical stab using a laminated outline or balsa strip outline with a vertical triangular spar and 1/32"x1/8" strip ribs over the spar. The flat vertical stab just doesn't do it for me. I leave the design of the landing gear attachment to the builder. I would be using fixed non-flex gear attached to the wing and fuselage. The wheel spats use a 1/4" balsa center lamimation with cutout for the wheel made from 3/32" balsa disc.

Thanks again for your great site. I love looking at all the plans for inspiration and technique in plan design! Keep up the great work!!

    ScaleType: This (oz15425) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_260
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

This gentleman clearly is a paragon of taste. Might I suggest the Outerzone repository of 3-views for your sleepless nights? It rests at https://rclibrary.co.uk/3view/index.asp :)

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
