About this Plan

Champ. Radio control sport model. Wingspan 45-1/2 in.

Note the F Lajeunesse free flight Champ (oz5237) design first appeared in Model Aircraft, May 1947. This here is a later version, adapted for RC.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hello again Mary and Steve, You already have F. Lajeuness's Champ (oz5237) in your archives, but here is a later redrawn version of the plan for RC by Barry Richards. This was presented free in Radio Modeller magazine in 1985. Shown is a rather unusual arrangement for pitch control; an all-flying tailplane which has a tail skid mounted to it. Personally, I would reconsider the practicality of this feature, given that every bump and tuft of grass encountered by the tail skid would translate as a jarring shock to the elevator servo. I note that by the time the plan was published, no flight testing had taken place.

Were I to construct the model, I would probably opt for a more conventional separate elevator, built into the tailplane. With all that said, it makes an interesting alternative to the Junior 60 and with that heavily undercambered section, would be quite the floater. All the best, Dilwyn"

Update 10/8/2024: Added alternate plan scan on a single sheet, also clearer scan of the article, thanks to Circlip, RFJ.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
