09 Hornet (oz15402)
About this Plan
09 Hornet. Radio control sport model. Wingspan 40 in, for .09 engine.
Quote: "Enlarged version of Mile High Models' Hornet (oz5419) incorporating a symmetrical airfoil, 4 oz tank, and .09 engine."
Quote: "I consider this one of my most successful designs. It is a very conventional layout, builds light, and is definitely lively in the air. Overall, there is very little that I would consider changing. There are 'builder preference' items that you may wish to consider ahead of time, such as:
Dual aileron servos in the wing
Adding a rudder
Side-mounted engine with fully-enclosed cowling
Landing gear
Wing Construction: This wing uses one of my favorite techniques for construction. It's based on two oversized sticks used for the leading edge and trailing edge. The steps are briefly outlined on the plans, so only a few extra comments are needed. It is important to draw accurate center lines on the full length of the LE and TE sticks, and on all the ribs. When you glue the ribs in place, it's a simple matter to line up the center lines for a perfectly straight, warp-free wing.
Add the top sheeting and all the capstrips and allow to dry. When you flip the wing over, you will need to use 3/32" shims under the LE and TE sticks to make room for the sheeting. Add the bottom sheeting and capstrips, and you are virtually done. This does leave the task of carving the LE and TE to shape, but that's not too tough on a small wing like this.
Fuselage Construction: This is a pretty simple box so there's not much to elaborate on here. One minor thing I would change would be to extend the ply doublers forward to the front edge of the firewall, so that the firewall is glued to plywood rather than balsa..."

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
