Quote: "In 1974 I designed and built the Electraglide 62 (oz5272) which was my first successful electric powered glider. It was inspired by the Hegi Sheibe Motorspatz kit from that era. It was only the second electric model published in the old Radio Control Modeler magazine in 1975.

I decided to build another Electraglide 62 with brushless motor, folding prop and modern radio gear. The original model RTF weight was about 36 ounces. This consisted of heavy 6 cell nicad pack, an Astro 05 can motor and 1970’s RC gear including a receiver, 3 servos, a SPDT switch and a separate battery for the radio (No ESC’s for many years). The original can motor was mounted in a tube and the battery was under the wing.

Some massive changes would be needed to install the current state electric power in a 2020’s version. I traced the fuselage from the original plan with the idea of only adding a battery access hatch and a nose mount for a brushless motor.

About that time I was flying a 48” version of the Midwest Dyna-Moe (oz6463). That model had been redesigned with a flat bottom version of the original 1949 airfoil. It proved to be a terrific soarer. I installed a telemetry receiver and found that I could easily find thermals with his small glider.

I decided to discard the original Electraglide wing plan and replace it with an enlarged wing from the 48” Dynamo. I was also afraid the model would be tail heavy, so I decided to use an enlarged Dynamo lifting stab. Hence the Electa-Dyn was conceived.

The Electra-Dyn uses tried and true balsa airplane construction techniques. It features a novel bottom battery access hatch to retain the shape of the fuselage front and windshield area. I installed a single wheel to assist in landings on pavement.

The wing is three part polyhedral to make the bolt on wing easier to build and install. In addition, I planned so that the spar is built over the over the plan prior to any other wing construction which makes the wing build much easier.

The original model is covered in white and transparent red Ultracote.

An Innov8tive Cobra C2208-34 motor, a Cobra 22 amp esc and a 8x 4 folding prop. was installed. The RC gear includes Spectrum AR6610T telemetry receiver and two Hitec HS5055MG servos. I use a 3s, 450 mah 70C lipo for power. This yield over 110 watts for nice vertical climbs.

The result is a very nice high-performance sport sailplane at home in an afternoon thermal or for evening sport flying. "

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
