About this Plan

Carrera Primus. Radio control powered sailplane, for electric power with geared can motor. Wingspan 2600 mm.

Equipped with the electric flight set (order no. 91845), the Primus becomes a high-performance electric flight model with excellent prospects of success in corresponding competitions. With a charge of the drive battery, the model can climb to the limit of visibility. Since the drive can be switched on and off as required using a third servo, it is possible to climb to a medium starting altitude and then repeatedly cross windless areas. Even in weather conditions with no thermals on the plain, the achievable flight time is almost always over 20 minutes.

Before construction begins, the following parts, which are not included in the kit, are required: A completely flat, straight construction board (approx 1.40 m long, 40 cm wide), hard glue, contact glue, sandpaper (coarse medium fine), sanding block, jigsaw, balsa knife and plane, pins, clothespins and rubber rings.

The entire structure of the model was designed so that no additional structures or similar aids need to be created. The wings and tail units are assembled directly on the construction plan, which is protected with an adhesive-repellent film.

The fuselage construction, parts (1) to (44):

The fuselage construction of the Primus glider model is designed so that construction can be carried out quickly and efficiently. The large number of high-quality and precisely manufactured plastic parts shortens the construction time by several times that of a conventional construction kit.

First, all the parts printed or punched on plywood are carefully sawn out. The punched parts are to be cut out of the boards with a sharp knife and deburred. Once all the parts have been prepared according to the parts list (1) to (44), or up to (48 for electric sailboats), the hull construction can begin.

First, a right and a left side wall are built. The side panel reinforcement (1) is to be glued onto the fuselage support (2), flush with the edges. (Only the upper edge of the front part of the fuselage, on the later cabin support, protrudes 2 mm).

Then mark and glue the fuselage straps (3) and (4) using the plastic frames (9) to (13) that will only be needed later. The fuselage straps (3) should protrude approx. 5 mm at the front. Now apply the triangular strips (5), (6) and (7) flat to the inside of the fuselage side panels. Make them exactly flush with the edges of the side panels. The gluing up to this stage of construction was carried out using contact adhesive.

The triangular strips are then cut out of the side panels that are now finished. (6) and (7) are sanded at an angle (see plan litimpfd top view) so that the fuselage is 17 mm wide at the end. (This is the width of the rudder spar (26) to be glued on later).

Now fit the stiffener (8) and also glue it on with contact adhesive (between the strips (6) and (7).

Now the two side parts at the end of the fuselage are wrapped (without glue) with Tesa masking tape or rubber and held together (see photo). Snap the frames (9) to (14) into their designated seats with the addition of glue (use hard glue here, as only this guarantees reliable gluing) and press the two side parts together with rubber rings, or better still with Tesa masking tape. Do not put any glue in the engine mount bearings of the frames (11) and (12). Important: All frames should be placed with the numbered side facing forward in the direction of flight..."

Hello Mary, hello Steve, here is my Primus from Carrera [pics 005, 006]. He is still active. The glider model has a wingspan of 2.60 m and good flight characteristics. It is still in its original condition. I only replaced the old RC components and the old electric drive.

Hello Mary, hello Steve, I think there is an error in the appendix to the Primus from Carrera. The attached systems do not belong to the Primus from Carrera, but to a newer CNC construction kit from Simprop.

Ah, got it. Yes, the supplement catalogue page is actually from Simprop from a later, more modern version. Have added a note on there now. Many thanks :)

Looking at this again, thanks to Bernhard, the Simprop catalogue page is of a different model, using different construction and at a different wingspan. Have removed that page now, it's less confusing that way.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
