About this Plan

Harding Biplane. Free flight sport model, for rubber power. Wingspan 38 in.

Note this plan and article are taken from the book "Models for Flying" by Rippon and Sparey, circa 1938.

Quote: "Chapter XIII: The Harding Biplane. This model biplane is interesting for several reasons. First, it represents a class of machines that has been much neglected by most builders. In the second place, it is a good example of the neat and simple construction of a somewhat complicated-looking aeroplane. Further, it is modern, both in construction and appearance, and is capable of a performance equal to that of most duration monoplanes. The average flight duration, throughout one season, was over two minutes.

Construction presents no difficulty; especially if a full sized drawing is obtained.

Fuselage: This is begun by building a primary box structure, with 1/8 x 1/16 hard balsa longerons, and 1/16 square-section balsa uprights and cross-bracers. When this primary structure is completed, the front portions of the longerons are strengthened by the addition of 1/16 square-section balsa, cemented between the cross-struts as far as the fifth bay, thus converting the longerons into 'L' spars, up to this point. To give strength to the nose, 1/16 sheet balsa is cut to shape and cemented intothe first bays on all four sides.

At the rear end, similar pieces of 1/8 sheet balsa are cemented between the longerons on either side of the fuselage, and into these pieces, holes are drilled to receive the rubber anchorage peg.

At this stage, sheet balsa corner-blocks should be cemented into the fuselage at the points where the undercarriage will be attached ; and short lengths of 20 s.w.g. brass tubing, pushed through these corner-blocks, are cemented, to form a housing for the undercarriage legs.

The small formers, which are used to give an oval section to the fuselage, may now be out from 1/16 in soft sheet balsa, and cemented into their appropriate positions on the fuselage uprights and cross-members. Over these formers the 1/16 square-section balsa stringers are cemented as indicated by the dotted lines and location marks in the side elevation in Fig.161. It will be noted that pieces of 1/32 balsa are cemented between the stringers at the nose of the machine. The small, underslung fin may also be added at this stage ; it consists of a bamboo framework held by two balsa corner-blocks, and supported by two pieces of 1/16 in. balsa arranged in a V... "

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
