About this Plan

Dewoitine D.520. Profile scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 46 cm.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "How to build the rubber powered profile model Dewoitine D.520:

Cut out all wooden parts; transfer all those pencil lines from the plan to the wood, sand all parts well.

Wing: Strengthen LEs with linen/cotton; join wings using epoxy and linen/cotton, set dihedral at 8,2 (4,1 each) cm.

Fuselage: Carefully cut out room for rubber, get steelwire into given shape, carve out place on steelwire-hook, install wirehoook with epoxy and cover with one piece on linen/cotton, let dry. Make slot for horizontal stab and make cutout for wing.

Cut from B 5 scratch the five nose elements, glue them in given sequence one on the other. When dry sand generously and than use Balsa puty to fill all holes. Later sand to obtain a clean and smooth surface. Drill according to your prop mount the necessary opening. Note that airscrew axle must point down a litle.

Glue nose assembly to fuselage, observing that symmetry is reached. Glue side stiffeners to fuselage and to nose assembly.

Empennage / Tail assembly: first glue horizontal stab/elevator to fuselage. Align to get 90 degree right angle, should look convincing at the end. Let dry. Now glue vertical stab/rudder in its place..."

Update 20/6/2024: Added more photos [pics 008-012], thanks to Robert Schlickewitz. These show a variant with separate rubber power unit.

Quote: "Here comes my second model of the D.520. It is even easier to build as it is made of fewer parts. Power is provided by a rubber power unit (RPU). This unit is attachable through two pieces of Velcro tape and can thus be used five minutes later on a Hurricane or a Zero or a Reggiane of the same configuration.

You build only one RPU and use it on as many modelplanes as you wish. Main material of the RPU comes from the grocery store next road: four barbecue skewer chopsticks plus scratch balsa plus rubber plus a commercial plastic airscrew. That's all.

The rednosed Dewoitine flies as well as the variant with built-in rubber
motor. Models with RPU in general use the same asymmetrical principle as is known from those No-cal-models. From the left side they look pretty convincing handsome as from the right side the power unit disturbs the harmonic view considerably."

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
