The Bristol Type 138 High Altitude Monoplane was a British high-altitude single-engine, low-wing monoplane research aircraft developed and produced by the Bristol Aeroplane Company during the 1930s. It set nine world altitude records, with the maximum altitude achieved being 53,937 ft (16,440 m) on 30 June 1937, during a 2ΒΌ-hour flight.
I was intrigued by the long wingspan and the potential for a rubber powered model. I also liked the silver and black paint scheme on the single prototype.
The wing is built using the Dave Rees style sliced rib constrution. Mike Stuart has a very good tutorial on this construction on his site: Mike's flying scale model pages under his technique section, see http://www.ffscale.co.uk/rees.htm I highly recommend this site for all the other info and plans he has available.
The fuselage is built using the fuselage box style with added formers to flesh out the fuselage. I think this will make a nice model. The cowling is built up and can be filled between the 3rd and 4th Cowling disc to smooth out the cowling or it can be covered with bond paper or tissue. I would us balsa infil to add a bit weight to the nose as this is a short moment nose aircraft where you'd probably have to add weight to balance. I think this will be a fun build. Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
