About this Plan

Model L. Free flight sport model. Wingspan 50.1 in, wing area 330 sq in.

Quote: "Hi Mary, Please see attached a plan for the 50in wingspan Model L, another fantastic design by O.F.W. (Peter) Fisher who ran Performance Kits. This is a little known design, which he first flew in 1973, but which he never kitted or published. As far as I know he only ever supplied the plan. I have included the only image I know of this model, which is from Peters 1977 book, Model Aero Engines. The plan for this came from the estate of the late John Kemp, via his friend David Hill. John Kemp was a close friend of the late Peter Fisher and had a number of Peter Fisher’s plans. I have been working with David Hill to get these plans repaired, scanned and cleaned up, so they could be posted on Outerzone... Best wishes, Mark Robinson"

Hi Mary/Steve, Please see attached some pictures [pics 004-008] of my Peter Fisher Model L during construction, which will be powered by a 1948 ED Competition Special 2cc. It's a really enjoyable build. I will send more images when finished.

I think that this model would struggle with only a Brat ignition engine for power. I have two of them and the better one will only just fly a FF Diamond Demon, which is considerably lighter than the weight given on the plan for the Model L - not helped by the enormous ignition coil also shown. I discussed this with Mark Robinson and we agreed that it was probably there to help keep the CofG in the desired position. A .19 ignition engine would be a better choice unless its a really good Brat (!).

Thanks David, totally agree with all you have said above. Will be interesting to see how the cg works out, especially as I have a 3.7g servo just under the tailplane for the elevator! I have made provision to put the battery way forward and it has a decent nose length, so fingers crossed!

There is some familiarity in the wing and tailplane structures, though that can't be a surprise coming from the same designer. Otherwise they are completely different - raised tailplane, open cockpit, cabane structure, fuselage profile, etc., on the Ziz, but absent on the Model L.

Does anyone know the origin of the name Model L please? Its completely different to any other of Fisher's model names.

Interestingly in Fishers 1977 book, Model Aero Engines, he refers to the Model L, but he also calls it the Capital L. It's certainly a break from the typical naming of his models.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
