About this Plan

Icthyornis. Free flight sport biplane model. Wingspan 40 in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hi Mary/Steve, Please see attached a plan for the Icthyornis, a really interesting biplane design by O.F.W. (Peter) Fisher from Performance Kits. The top wing is 40” and the lower 30”. I have never seen any reference to this model before, it’s unclear as to whether this design was ever made available. The plan for this came from the estate of the late John Kemp, via his friend David Hill. John Kemp was a close friend of the late Peter Fisher and had a number of Peter Fisher’s plans. I have been working with David Hill to get these plans repaired, scanned and cleaned up, so they could be posted on Outerzone.

The plan we obtained for the Icthyornis was in poor condition, with a small section of either end omitted in the copy process, however this does not affect the user’s ability to interpret it and build the model. Because I have done so much work to clean this plan up, I am including a scan of the original. The original plan from John Kemp was not full size, if printed 100%. I have therefore resized the cleaned-up plan, so if printed 100% the top wing is 40” and the lower 30” as stated on the plan.

So much of Peter Fisher’s designs are still hard to find, or simply unavailable, so it will be great to see them on Outerzone. All the best, Mark Robinson"

Hi, I'm a huge fan of Peter Fisher and his models and I thought I knew all his designs but this is a new one to me. I'm going to clear my current project off the building board and start building the Icthyornis this afternoon!!!!
The plan I'm still looking for is the Kingfisher, a simple high wing cabin model Peter kitted, I built one in the 70s and it was a great little flyer.

I'm curious as to how one person goes by OFW Fisher and Peter Fisher interchangeably. Also, and probably implicit in the first question... what does the OFW stand for? He seems to be a popular designer, and certainly prolific. Please forgive my ignorance. I was born in 1964, so I'm a child of the 1970's and strictly an RC child at that (although I love ALL forms of airplane modeling).

Its quite simple, his given names were Ocean Francis William, which he did not like and preferred to be called Peter.

Simon Rogers - really pleased to hear you're a big Peter Fisher fan, he certainly did some excellent designs. Great you're going to build the Icthyornis, please post some pictures of the build and the finished model would love to see it. Like you I really like his designs!

Hi Steve & Mary, Please find attached photos of the Ichthyornis [main pic, 003, 004] built from your plan OZ15294, waiting for the wind to drop so I can get out and fly it. The motor is a Mills 75, the plan states 1.5cc--2.5cc which seems a bit excessive but if it is under powered I've got a Mills 1.3 that I can put in it. Regards,

Great job Simon! Looks like it should fly well. Would be great to see it in the air at Buckminster some time.
David Hill - 13/01/2025
I don't want to be pessimistic but wasn't Icthyornis a large flightless bird from pre history?

Thank you Simon for sharing pictures of your Icthyornis, it looks great, and you have made an excellent job of the build, they are really good to see. Hope to see it at Buckminster flying sometime.

Regarding the name, no, not flightless. "The wings and breastbone were very modern in appearance, suggesting strong flight ability and placing it with modern birds in the advanced group Carinatae" from wikipedia. It also had teeth.

Ichthyornis means Fish Bird and it was about the size of a pigeon, basically a prehistoric sea gull.

Isn't this high-shelf name simply some pun on Peter's surname? If it is, it worked quite well.
Miguel - 15/01/2025
"Ocean Fisher." That would be fun having a surname this is both a noun and a verb...

He had a brother named 'Forest'. I learnt this odd detail in a lovely article on his life story* in the current 2025-02 issue of Aeromodeller. I know this is a shameless plug, but never mind my morals and go get the magazine. 1053 issues so far of absolute stick and tissue joy :)
* spoiler - he married a jaw-dropping beauty of a woman!

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
