Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hy everyone! I like to share my first plan with you and the community. It is the Elektro-fly from Graupner, fist shown on the Spielwarenmesse Nürnberg 1978. Wingspan is 1.797mm (70 inch). Best regards,"

Update 31/1/2024: Added zipfile of CAD-drawn parts, thanks to Andi.

Quote: "Hy Mary, here are the DXF-Files for the wooden parts of the Elektro-fly, and one STL for the cowling. Also some pics, taken from my CAD software [pics 004-007]. Have a beautifull weekend, Andi"

Update 31/1/2024: Added exploded view, also RC installation drawing, thanks to Doro.

Update 31/1/2024: Added kit review from FMT, Feb 1980, thanks to Doro.

Quote (google-translated): "Electric flight: FMT introduces Elecktro-fly from Graupner.

Graupner presented the Elektro-fly at the 78 Toy Fair: it closes the gap between gliders with electric auxiliary drives and electric motor models. On one hand, it is small and maneuverable enough for simple aerobatics, but on the other hand, it is large enough that soaring is also possible.

Thanks to the divided surface, the model can also be easily accommodated in a small car. For 'just flying around' on vacation, on a walk or in the evening, that’s exactly what the Elektro-fly is ideal for.

The kit is of first-class quality. The punchings were extremely clean, the accuracy of fit can hardly be improved. Particularly noteworthy is the enclosed ground rib block (as in the old fashioned custom, and just as good!), which really shortens the area construction considerably. In addition, both halves of the surface are drawn on the plan (and all the ribs too!). The wood was of the usual good quality from Graupner.

For reasons of stability, the usual side flap for changing the drive battery is not provided. Deviating from the construction plan, I installed this convenient change option. The fuselage floor was reinforced with two pre-bent pine strips 3 x 5 mm between frames 9 and 13 and the flap was glued with a 5 mm piece of balsa that was fitted precisely into the opening in the side wall. Together with an intermediate base made of 2 mm balsa, the stability is certainly sufficient and the additional weight is not too great.

When building, you should make sure that the motor pull increases rather than decreases towards the bottom. The precisely punched parts ensure that the angle of attack between the tailplane and the wing is fixed. The center of gravity can be achieved without lead, using flight batteries between 7 and 10 cells. The test model was ironed with foil.

In flight, the electric fly meets all expectations that are reasonably required of them. Seven cells are just enough, 8 cells are just right for fun flying and with 10 cells (propeller 19 x 12) you can keep up with the 'Radau brothers' for about 3-1/2 minutes.

All in all: The Elektro-fly is a very handy model, which is easy to build and stands out due to its good flight performance. Karl Kapfer."

Update 31/1/2024: Added kit instructions (in German) thanks to Stefan, Doro.

Great teamwork on this milestone electric plane!
Thank you Doro and Stefan for adding your files.

Was my first electric model! Unluckily it made only 6 flights, hat to repair it after each flight, mostly the wingsection of the fuselage....

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
