Clipped Wing Taylorcraft (oz14968)
About this Plan
Clipped Wing Taylorcraft. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 29-1/2 in, wing area 150 sq in. Scale is 1/12.
Quote: "SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLIPPED WING TAYLORCRAFT KIT.
NOTE: The 3/32 square top spar on the wing has been changed to 3/32 x 1/8. These two pieces are end color coded red.
1. Be sure wing ribs W-1 are accurately positioned as they will sit EXACTLY on top of the fuselage box frame at F-6T.
2. The wing main spar is laminated from 1/16 balsa and 1/64 aircraft plywood. Do not install the main spar until final assembly. The proper dihedral angle will automatically be set when the wings are attached to the fuselage with the main spar.
3. Carefully note on the plan which 1/16 x 3/32 balsa diagonal supports are on top and which are on the bottom.
4. Be sure to round off the edges of the 3/32 square fuselage longerons as shown on the fuselage cross sections.
5. The cowl framework is built the same way as the fuselage box frame, and then glued to the front of bulkhead F-3 within the dotted lines.
6. Glue the 1/4 x 1-1/2 inch birch dowel in the spinner block and roughly carve the spinner to shape. Chuck the spin-ner in a hand power drill and turn to final shape with a sanding board. In order for the propeller free wheeling mechanism to work properly the spinner must be hollowed out adaquately. Use a small wood grinding bit for this job. Be ruthless here. MAKE SURE the prop shaft CAN NOT get hung up on the spinner. Cut slots for the propeller then wood fill and paint the spinner. Trace the final outline of the spinner base on the .040 styrene prop boss and trim to size. Assemble the prop, spinner, prop shaft, brass washers, teflon nose plug and prop boss as shown on the plan. Finally glue the prop boss to the spinner.
7. Patterns are supplied for trimming the Taylorcraft. First, tape a pat-tern of a trim piece to a flat cut-ting surface. Place a piece of red colored tissue over the pattern and tape it in place. Place a piece of wax paper over the tissue and tape in place. The trim piece can now be cut out with an X-Acto knife and a No.11 blade. Before attaching the trim tissue the model will have re-cieved two coats of clear dope thinned 50/50. Lay the trim tissue exact-ly in place on the model and brush in place with thinner. Give one fin-al. coat of 50/50 thinned dope.
8. Decals are supplied if you choose not to cut out the tissue letters..."

ScaleType: This (oz14968) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylorcraft_B
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Beautiful model! Thank you very much for posting!Fabio - 05/12/2023
If you want to detail this model in Duane Cole's livery, EAA has some nice pictures of the actual aircraft on their website here:

How not to like a John Bell plan? Fine work on the complete package, and thanks for the EAA link as well :)
Duane is shown flying below. EAA's first pres. appears at 0.05 on his restored can't-remember-what :))

Miguel, That looks like an F6F Hellcat.
RogerB - 06/12/2023
Not a Hellcat--it's the North American P-64 that EAA founder Paul Poberezny flew for many years in airshow performances. https://www.eaa.org/eaa-museum/museum-collection/aircraft-collection-folder/1940-north-american-p-64-na-50---n840

That's the one! Thanks, D.A. :)

If you pause the video at the 5s mark, you can read "North American P-64" right on the forward fuselage!

This is one of the things I love about this hobby. When I picked this kit up I didn’t know who Duane Cole was so I had to find out more about him. I also never knew about the NA P-64 and since I like history and obscure aircraft I’m going to have to do some more reading. Thanks DA for sending me down another rabbit hole ;).

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
