A couple of years ago I wanted something a little impressive to fly on 35ft lines at the Model Engineer Exhibition. The original Wild Boy was really too small and too fast. On top of that, I fitted it with spats which, to my surprise, moved enough to knock holes in the underside of the wing covering. So Mk II was built with more wing area and no spats. The result is a hairy little, beast which is very manoeuvrable, although I find it a bit much on 35ft lines and prefer 45ft ones.

I prefer models which look scale so to achieve this I take the trouble to put the undercarriage in the wing and incorporate some dihedral. Both of these features are cosmetic but worth the trouble.

In fact there are other things about this model which mean that the constnidion is not as fast as it could be. Not difficult mind you, but it takes just a little more time. Here are a few points.

The wing: All the rib blanks can be made by the sandwich method from light 1.5mm sheet. Note there are two for the centre rib and trim for the leadouts and sheeting. The two ply riblets can be shaped and glued to the R3's. A small strengthening plate goes on the inboard R2.

My method of making this type of wing is to glue the ribs first to one of the 1.5mm x 10mm strips of the trailing edge. Pin the strip down over the plan. Position the tip and root ribs using a strip about 6mm square, parallel to the TE and under the ribs, to hold them up in place. Remember to put a 1.5mm packing piece under R1 (and R2 if necessary) to allow for sheeting later. The lower spar can be put temporarily in position to ensure the ribs line up. Add the top of the LE and leave to dry. Put in the main spars and leave the wing to dry under a full length weight to keep it true.

Cut the LE from a sheet of 10mm sheet or make it up by gluing two square pieces together, using it with the joint line at the front. Shape it almost to the finished cross section before gluing it in place along with the TE cap strip. If you make the block tips from two layers of 6mm sheet it is easy to cut out a hole in the inner part of the outer tip for the tip weight..."
