About this Plan

Not Quite 48. Radio control sport model, for electric power. Wingspan 48 in, wing area 432 sq in.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hey bud, I call this one the 'Not Quite' ....she's not quite a glider, but she'll fly pretty slow, not quite a sport aerobatic, but one can increase the flight control surfaces, not quite a hotliner, though you can always juice the motor and prop, and she's definitely not hard to build. Just for grins, I ran a tag matrix search on OZ for similar sized and configured aircraft ( https://outerzone.co.uk/advanced/sea....asp?SpanTo=50 ) and lo' and behold, there's about 50 of them that are similar, but "Not Quite" the same... hence the name.

I've made a couple of changes......Trailing edge is now 5/16" (up from 1/4") and the ailerons are 5/16" x 1 1/4" (up from1/4" x 1"). I've also "juiced" the motor and prop to a 3536 1450kV (up from a 3530 1100kV) so I could use that Master Airscrew 8 x 4.5 MR series prop. The little motor wouldn't swing it..well, it would but only for about 30 seconds before I let the smoke out. 48" WS x 9 1/4" (444 sq in) PW-75 airfoil, 1/8" fuselage, 1/8" ply formers, 3/16" feathers. Servos are Freewing 17 gram metal gear digital, AR6210 receiver with satellite, T/E/A control. Color scheme is yellow wings and feathers with an insignia blue fuselage and a red and white stripe tail flash....kinda sorta like a PT-19. Cowling is black with a yellow 2" spinner (on order).

Hope you like it, It's basically a plans-bash of about 50 OuterZone airplanes...

See flight video at youtube.com/watch?v=s_DVRMAu-r4 I couldn't be more pleased.....easy launch, lots and lots of power, and she'll glide dead stick like a cub...The chase video was shot using a racing drone with a top speed of ~ 60 mph....I kept the Not Quite at ~ half throttle except for the entrance to the cuban 8 and once just to run off and leave the chase drone. Consensus is she's an 80+ mph hotliner.....probably not up to pylon racing standards, but she's quick, easy to fly, and no bad habits. Charlie"

Here's the second one, built her for a friend [pic 003]. Final configuration: AUW = 37.5 oz, Wing Loading = 37.5 oz / 3.08 sq ft = 12.16 oz/sq ft
Motor: DYS 3536-1450 kV 655 Watts - 279.5 W/lb, 75.5 oz thrust / 37.5 = 2.01 Thrust to Weight
Prop: Master Airscrew MR Series 8x4.5
Servos: Freewing 17 gr metal gear digital
Receiver: AR6210 w/ satellite 6 channel DSMX/DSM2
ESC: 60A Hobbywing with 5V-5A BEC.

Hey charlie,
I’ve been scrolling through the plans to find a good high wing, relatively large surface area plane with a similar wingspan as the not quite. I have been thinking on how the performance would be with a one pound wieght being towed on this rc plane after I build it. I have no experience whatsoever in rc building but I need to build one for this application. You think it would handle it and be able to perform some maneuvering with this towed weight ?
Saeed - 06/11/2023
Saeed,
This thing was built for speed. I'm not sure how she would respond to a tow weight, and since she's a hand launch, I'd think towing anything would be challenging. However, I did a 42" Ugly stik that might be suitable.

Looking at the plans, this thing seems pretty heavy already for its size, and adding a one pound weight, whether towed or carried inside doesn't look feasible at all, especially with no previous building experience. If I were you, a better idea would be to seek out a competent RC builder and flyer to handle the aircraft part of your experiment and you can do the rest, avoiding disappointment. I have a little experience carrying weight with an RC model, which carried, and dropped five pounds of candy for the kiddies. It had a high lift wing of 84" span and a 60 size motor. No problem with the weight, but it took a lot longer to take off. Good luck on your project.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
