About this Plan

Piper Cub. Free flight scale model for rubber power. Wingspan 22 in.

Quote: "This is one model that needs no introduction. A familiar sight at any airport, the Cub is so popular that to most people any single engine lightplane is referred to as a Cub no matter what other make it may be.

Our little Cub is a stable flier just like the real ship and faithfully follows its lines with only minor concessions be-ing made for easy construction and good flying ability. Unlike the real Cub, the fuselage is slab sided to allow sheet construction and the stabilizer is enlarged slightly. The sparless wing worked out very nicely and is quickly constructed.

Since full size plans are provided we have no scaling up problems. Just remove the plans from the magazine and carefully cement or tape them together. Use the fuselage centerline as a reference line in lining up the plan halves. Place waxpaper over the plan when building for protection and to keep the parts from sticking to it.

CONSTRUCTION: Fuselage and tail: Cut out formers #2 through 7 from 1/16 sheet and former #1 from 1/32 sheet. Bend the land-ing gear from 1/32 dia wire and cement it to former #2 as shown on the landing gear sketch. Then cut out the fuselage sides from 1/32 sheet. Transfer the fuse-lage outline from the plan to the 1/32 sheet by placing the wood under the plan and then punching a pin through the plan at approximately 1/4 in intervals on all the curved portions. On straight lines all you need is one pin hole at each end. When cutting, line up a straight edge with these pin holes and cut using the straight edge as a guide. Cut out the 1/32 sheet doublers and cement them in place on the sides.

Now, cement formers #3 & #4 in place. Let the cement set a few minutes and then pull the sides together at the rear and cement. A spring-type clothespin will come in handy for holding the sides together here. Place the fuselage upside down over the plan and check to see if it is bent. It can be straightened by moving the sides back and forth slightly at the rear before the cement sets.

Let the fuselage sit in this position for about a half an hour until the cement dries. While you are waiting, cut out the tail surfaces. Use a light grade of balsa and note the grain direction. Transfer the out-line in the same manner as you did for the fuselage sides and then cut out. Sand them lightly and round the edges..."

    ScaleType: This (oz14791) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_J-3_Cub
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
