About this Plan

Champion XL. Radio control sport model, for electric power.

Note the original Champion (oz13239) kit from Hobbies UK was 36 in span and for free flight. This here is a modern redrawn plan at larger size, for RC with electric power.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Dear Steve and Mary, A couple of years ago you managed to track down for me a plan of the Hobbies Champion (oz13239).

I have finally got round to scaling up the design (by a factor of 1.8) and building what has now become 'Champion XL'. I've attached a pdf copy of the plan (2 x A0 sheets) and a few photos of the finished model for possible publication on Outerzone. I have made a few minor changes to the design (reduced dihedral, wider built-up trailing edge to the wing, full D-box wing, electric power and larger rudder, plus elevator). The character of the model is still very much that of the original Hobbies design.

Power is a 4-Max 3541/08 driving a 14" x 7" propeller with a 2900 3S LiPo. Initial flights have been very successful, with gentle, even stately, progress through the sky. All-up weight is 4 pounds and wing loading a shade under 15 ounces per square foot, so a moderately calm-weather flyer.

The plan includes fairly detailed building notes so should not present problems to anyone with a few traditional models under their belt. The balance point shown is conservative and according to the normally-accepted formula could be moved back somewhat, but that is for future experimentation.

Kind regards, Jeremy Collins"

Yes indeed. They are.

I can't see any kind of fuel-proofing looking at that photo of the power plant (005).
Perish the thought, of course, but what happens if there is an electron leak?
Miguel - 16/08/2023
It all depends which direction the electrons leak. if they leak out the nose, you can collect them in a little cup and funnel them back into the battery. If they leak out the back, the tail will start to grow feathers.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
