About this Plan

Wolkenbeisser 140. Radio control sailplane model.

Note the original Wolkenbeisser (oz11995) dates back to 1950 and was for free flight, at 86 in wingspan. This here is a modern redrawn version for RC, at 140% scale.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Dear Steve, Wolkenbeisser short story - how it came to this: In the beginning it was only a friendship work for my friend and AMD-colleague (https://antikmodellflugfreunde.de/) Volker who want to build the Wolkenbeisser a little enlarged (140% / 312cm/ 124inch) but with an adequate Profile. This was a question when we met last year in Kaltensundheim/Thüringen during our Rhoen-week. I promised him I'd have a more detailed look at the wing and the complete situation of aerodynamics in that case, not just a single profile. It ended up with an FLZ Vortex Model suitable for a glide ratio of 22 to 23, that’s fantastic.

During our time to time reviews I told him to make it easy for him and put the wing strake and elevator in CAD so we could laser ribs and Helling. So far he started his build and constructed the fuselage himself on paper but the laser parts for wing and elevator was a good help for him.

He had only asked for a suitable profile. It took not so much time when I thought would be a shame to leave these data untouched and forgotten, that was the start to make a complete plane in CAD out of it.

As I had some projects to finish before, I scheduled to make a Wolkenbeisser myself and bring it as a surprise to one of the next meetings. It was hard for me not to speak about it but when we met in Leipzig, home of Wolkenbeisser and even Gerhard Krabs who made the vintage design in 1950 and flew it in the area of Leipzig, I came to the field an brought some poloshirts to keep the spirit of Wolkenbeisser alive.

Volker had for the second time no chance to fly his electrified one by that time, due to servo issues. On Saturday morning I opend the trunk and ask for help with my plane, I handed the wing over, a questioning face looked at me, than came the elevator and Volker asked what type of plane is that? You never had something like this before ;-). Finally the fuselage was unwrapped from the protective blanket and you could see a very asthonished and impressed Volker! That was a super impressive day for us all. I was sorry that Volker couldn’t fly his Wolkenbeisser that day, but my model had a fantastic Maiden flight and the strong wing with 30-40km/h gusts was easy to handle, just a little elevator down and it walks forward, fantastic.

That’s the story why the Wolkenbeisser came this way and how it is designed. Everyone who likes to build it is welcome to download dxf machining data. The sewing of Aramid roving is a new manufacturing method we dreamed of before and build it to perfection in his fuselage. See details on the plan sheet and fotos. It makes it optimized torsional stiff and even very light.

Have lots of fun with your own build and flying, the best flights are still in front of us, Regards Matthias"

Note the main planfile here is a single PDF file with 18 sheets. This serves as a quick overview. For a more detailed (itemised) view, see the supplement file "named_sheets.zip" for the same plan, but here each plan sheet has a title of material and size. Then of course there is the full CAD file download in DXF format. Steve.

Another one of your clever redesigns, I believe your story of taking it out of your van by bits, the realization must have been a funny reaction!
It's always a pleasure to download your plans and look at them just for enjoyment's sake, they are well worth that!

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
