About this Plan

Great Lakes Trainer. Control line scale biplane model, for .19 to .35 engines.

Quote: "A classic from aviation's Golden 30's. The Great Lakes Trainer reproduced in this control line scale model woudl perhaps best be described as a true classic from the Age of Classics.

Its beautifully fitted and streamlined nose cowling enclosed an upright ACE Cirrus III 4-cyclinder inline air-cooled 90 hp engine. The smooth design of this beautiful biplane is enhanced by the swept back top wing, which added increased visibility, stability and all-round performance of the aircraft. These distinctive features were typical of the beautiful designs of that era.

Attesting to the excellence of the basic design and strength, the Great Lakes Trainer was chosen by one of the greatest stunt pilots of all time, Hal Krier, to be refitted with a 185 hp Warner Radial engine, which he flew spectacularly for many years.

Our model of the Great Lakes Trainer is a realistic miniature of its famous full-size prototype. Simplicity of design and high degree of pre-fabrication, makes assembly relatively simple. The finished model is a beautiful replica of the real thing, and delivers great flying performance. "

No wing ribs or fuselage formers with this scan, sadly.

Hi dear; I am very happy to be familiar with the outerzone site. I hope that in the near future this bi- plane will have the parts and rib wing templates on the your site.
Your Sincerely

Fixed now, thanks to Pit.

Thanks Pit and Steve! In my opinion, Great Lakes biplanes were *the* american biplanes as the Tiger Moth in the UK or the Buecker Jungmeister in Germany.

Attached [pic 005] is a scan of the much-faded only surviving picture I have of my Great Lakes Trainer from around 1975/6. I hope you can use it on the OZ site. I built her when I was 15 years old. It was powered by an OS25 engine, covered in tissue and painted with humbrol enamels. She flew beautifully. I had her for a couple of years until the ‘up’ line broke one day :( I see that the parts profiles are on the OZ site. I may consider building another in the near future :) Regards,

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
