ScaleType: This (oz14504) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairchild_24
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Interesting in that the box image doesn't match the plans. Between 1937 and 1938 Fairchild did two external changes to the Model 24 line. Prior to 38 the rear passenger window trailing edge curved downward from the top to straight line bottom and the aircraft had a narrow chord fin. '38 and onward the rear window trailing edge curved upward to a straight top edge, and the had a broad chord fin similar to the PT-19 trainer. The plans so pre 38 the picture is post 38

Hemm. I wonder if the modeler who put together the box model put the window in upside down?

An online image search for the "NC16871" registration number yields this nice photo: https://www.airhistory.net/photo/450064/NC16871

I've just noticed the latest comment regarding the Fairchild 24 with up- and down-swept rear windows. Both methods were used. I've attached two period photos showing this, admittedly on the non-radial powered version [pics 005, 006].

Hello, Here's a couple photos of my Fairchild Ranger [mainpic, 010-013] built from your plan oz14504. It's a great flyer!
I also have a YouTube video that reviews the build and test flights of the model: https://youtu.be/7IhP-WotkLU
Thank you and keep up the great work!

Beautiful John, just beautiful. It is great to see someone building a model from one of the plans I sent to Outerzone. This is one of the main reasons I love this site, so others can enjoy building and fly little masterpieces like yours.
BTW it looks like you scaled up the horizontal stab from the plans. Was there a reason you did that?
RogerB - 16/02/2024
Hi Roger. I did step up the stab a bit. Always makes a model easier to trim. This one really is a great flyer. BTW, you can seem my build video here if you already haven't: https://youtu.be/7IhP-WotkLU

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
