About this Plan
Tough Cookie. Control line trainer model. Wingspan 18 in, for 1 - 1/5 cc motors.
Direct submission to Outerzone.
Quote: "Hi, Mary and Steven. Good Morning.
Some weeks ago, I bought one back issue of Aeromodeller magazine (the October 1979's issue), which had the plan of one little 1/2A C/L trainer ('Tough Cookie', designed by John Stroud), as the centerfold plan. I want to share it with the Outerzone community. So I scanned it (with the article), and vectorized it, to PDF and both vector CAD formats DWG and DXF, as I usually do.
Happy Easter Holidays. And greetings from your friend. Valeria367."
Update 17/4/2023: Added complete article, thanks to Valeria367.

Building Instructions: Cut 18 in of a 4 x 1/4 balsa sheet for wing and glue to it a 1/4 sq spruce leading edge using rubber bands or Sellotape to keep in position. Cut out balsa and spruce parts of the fuselage. 1/4 sq components can be trimmed to exact length later. Glue Parts together using pins and rubber bands to hold in position.
Trace shape of 2 nose doublers onto 1/16 ply and cut out slightly oversize. Remove engine opening from one doubler only. Draw tailplane and fin on 1/8 balsa sheet and cut out. Cut off elevator which can be sewn in place after covering and doping. Glue fin to tail plane with slight offset as shown.
When wing assembly is dry, trim tips to shape and sand or plane to section (except centre strip, leave square for insertion into fuselage). Make 1/16 ply line guide and glue to wing by making slots in the wing for the tongues. Glue and bolt 1/16 ply bellcrank pivot reinforcement in the correct position top and bottom.
When fuselage assembly is dry sand assembly flat and glue doublers either side. Leave flat under weights to dry, before trimming and sanding to shape. Insert and glue wing and tailplane to fuselage. Support assembly to give accurate rigging and leave to thoroughly dry. Round off all corners and sand to a smooth finish. Fillet all joints with extra glue.
Cover the whole model with lightweight tissue using wall paper paste as adhesive, overlap all edges. When dry give two coats of clear dope.
Bend control wire leadouts and pushrod as necessary and assemble control system onto model and sew on elevator. Ensure free control movement. Attach engine and fuel tank using rubber bands. Move engine until correct balance is achieved. Mark bearers and drill to correct size and position. Add tip weight until outboard wing is just heavierthan inboard. Remove control system, tankand engine and paint model with a fuel proof finish.
Finally reassamble control system and fix tank and engine permanently. Fly first on a calm day using 35 ft lines for 1 cc engines and 40 ft lines for 1.5cc engines. The prototype flies fairly fast but is easy to fly and has only needed minor repairs after dozens of crashes and has successfully taught five people to fly with three more still learning. "

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
