Redwing (oz14380)
About this Plan
Redwing. Radio control sport model.
The original Frog Redwing (oz1531) was an 18 inch free flight rubber model, circa 1953. This here is a later 2x version for RC and 0.5 - 1 cc engine.
Direct submission to Outerzone.

I'm on record as being a fan of the small rubber powered Frog models from back in the 1950`s. I build several of them from kits as a kid back around then before eventually acquiring my first model engine (a 1cc ED Bee) and moving on, first to controlline, then to free flight, and later to serious r/c....
Now, around sixty years later, it seems I`ve turned nearly full circle. These days I derive much pleasure from building (and designing) smaller models, mostly using the traditional methods and materials from back then. Smaller as my drawings are generally limited to standard A1 sheet size produced the old-fashioned way I was brought up on - pencil on tracing paper using the old cedar drawing board and tee square. A common proviso is that they are now mostly radio-controlled; my days of chasing free flight models around farm paddocks are long gone.
With some time on my hands I decided that an r/c model based on the iconic little 18 inch span rubber-powered Frog Redwing (oz1531) would be an attractive and practical project. And so it proved to be. The attached drawing was produced in short order and the build undertaken in accordance with a recent online 'RC Groups Vintage and Oldtimer' forum build-off.
Construction methods involved are typical of the time. Anyone who has, or can, build a Tomboy (oz285) or similar vintage type model will have no trouble with this one - basically 3/16" sq. balsa sticks and lighter sheet balsa. Wingspan is 940mm (37") and AUW as built is 485 gms (15.1oz). I elected to cover this one with plastic film rather than tissue and used an MP Jet .040 diesel fitted with an after-market r/c carb for motive power. I have overlooked to show the CG on the plan - balance in the mainspar is recommended.
Radio control is via three functions - rudder, elevator, and throttle. It would be a quite straightforward and practical modification to substitute a suitable electric motor for the IC engine if desired.
Flying is also straightforward. I applied 2 clicks of down-trim on the first flight and have stayed with that. It is a delight to fly and will handle simple aerobatics with ease - loops, flick-rolls, reversals etc, and has not surprised me with any vices to date. It`s a keeper. Alan W"

Quote: "Hello Steve and Mary, saw your site earlier this morning and read about the passing of Alan Wooster. Attached please find a Autocad LT drawing of his Redwing. I have been working on this drawing for a month and decided to finish it and send it on to you. The drawing is yours to use - I hope it is good enough. KW"

Another fine one catches the Ultimate Thermal, reaching for that big cumulus where we hope to meet.
His designs appear uncompetitive and relaxed, so he must have been quite a pleasant fellow. Sit tibi terra levis.

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
