About this Plan

I-Turcan. Radio control sport aerobatic model, for electric power.

Note the I-Turcan (oz11829) kit from Aviomodelli dates back to circa 1969. This here is a modern CAD-redrawn plan that shows balsa and ply fuselage construction, replacing the ABS formed parts of the original kit.

Note the 'original' drawing here is the CAD zip download (in dwg format). That's the file that Giuseppe sent us, and that is his design, his work. The PDF file you see here is really just a taster, a PDF file in this slot for Oz users who don't have a CAD viewer.

Quote (google-translated from the Italian): "Turcan, Turcan - paraphrasing Don Abbondio, one might ask: what model was this? Already because, at least in my memory, nothing appears that reminds me of it, since I have not completely vanished even if I am otherwise young and that, at the time of its marketing by Aviomodelli of Cremona in 1969, I was already inside model aircraft beyond any reasonable way.

Furthermore, personally knowing Adriano Castellani, owner of the company, entrepreneur, but also and above all aeromodeller who is always present at the weekends at the airfield, it seems to me almost impossible that this F3A from the 1960s has disappeared from my memory in which the various Loran, Laser, Maser, Barracuda, Radar and many other models produced by Aviomodelli in that period are instead present. So much; the fact is that having avoided the pulping of several drawings of the time that risked this inglorious end, this Turcan appeared among these.

The name is not the best, with rightly vintage lines, but with proportions that make it similar to models that appeared later in time. At the beginning of the winter season I found myself with no project to complete and with little desire to start demanding models, the Turcan had crept into the convolutions of my brain some time before and then, almost to pass some time, I started its construction.

The fuselage of the original model was in two vacuum-moulded ABS shells, joined along the longitudinal line with a profile, also in ABS in which the edges of the parts fit together. It was therefore necessary to rethink the structure and I resorted to a method that I frequently use to reproduce the fuselages with abundant curved parts easily and with little waste of wood: sides in balsa tablet and fairings in extruded polystyrene shaped with hot wire and with pad and then covered with 40 g/m2 glass fabric in one or two layers according to the need to have greater or lesser impact resistance.

The wing has also been redesigned from a structural point of view, as the Aviomodelli prototype made use of large shaped leading and trailing edges. I resorted to what I call the 'Nobler spar' from the name of George Aldrich's legendary VVC model (who doesn't know it or has never heard of it?) in which I saw it used for the first time..."

Quote: "Hi Mary, Racers saga has come to an end with Bearcat. I was involved in F3A Vintage in 2015 when the trend arose.
This is a kit by Aviomodelli, which happens to once run in my hometown. So I have many original drawings. This model, the Turcan had a two pieces plastic fuselage, besides there are no original kits available, so I redraw the model to be built with balsa and powered with electric power. Hope you'll like it. Ciao, Beppe"

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
