About this Plan

Rare Bear. Radio control sport scale model racer, for electric power.

Note the 'original' drawing here is the CAD zip download (in dwg format). That's the file that Giuseppe sent us, and that is his design, his work. The PDF file you see here is really just a taster, a PDF file in this slot for Oz users who don't have a CAD viewer.

Quote (google translated from the Italian): "The fastest, most powerful, most legendary and most excessive Unlimited racer of all time. Rare Bear, by Giuseppe Ghisleri.

And here finally, after four other racers, the most 'exaggerated' both for the performance of the original aircraft and for its awkward proportions. The model is not a perfect reproduction, wings and tail surfaces are to scale without modifications compared to the aircraft, at least as much as possible with the 3-views available, none the same as the other, while the fuselage has been streamlined slightly without modifications, at least my opinion, that characteristic flying-cask look of the Bearcat.

The model is the heaviest in the series: 4250 g in flight order, above all because it required an exaggerated amount of lead to ensure that the center of gravity fell into the correct position. There is plenty of space under the large engine fairing and so I was able to place the lead shaped like a parallelepiped immediately above the engine. Further than this was not possible.

In the end, the wing loading is 79 g/dm2 against the 62 of the KingCobra, the lightest in the series, and the 70 of the Corsair, therefore decidedly superior. The wing surface is 32 dm2, despite the aperture being the smallest. Given the considerable size of the chord, it is practically the same as the others.

In flight, the Rare Bear is easy to handle and fast, neither more nor less than its colleagues; only in landing does it demonstrate a tense glide that requires attention in order not to end up with the runway finished and the Rare Bear still in flight. Try to guess why I tell you this.

With the Rare Bear I definitively abandoned the use of the slingshot which had caused me minor accidents in at least three cases when the rope terminal got tangled in the propeller, dragging the model to the ground. The fault of the pilot; it would have been enough to wait a few seconds to start the engine and the thing could not have happened.

I then switched to the dolly which, up to now at least, hasn't caused any problems. For the Bearcat I had to build a new one because the other one, which was suitable for all previous models without modifications, could not be used in any way. This is to say how different this aircraft is from the KingCobra, Mustang, SeaFury and even the Corsair.

The motor and propeller are the same as on the Super Corsair: a 1250 Kv SunuySky X2R20-111, with APC E 11.55 propeller and powered by a 3-cell LiPo pack and 4700 mAh capacity. Under these conditions, the absorption is approximately 70 A, the power 700 W and the revolutions 11,000 per minute..."

ScaleType: This (oz14318) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_F8F_Bearcat
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
