About this Plan

DH82a Tiger Moth. Radio control scale model biplane. Wingspan 66 in.

Note plan also includes optional floats and skis.

Quote: "Introduction: This kit is a scale model of the most famous British biplane of all time. The model is straightforward to build and providing the instructions are followed carefully, construction is well within the capabilities of the average modeller. This kit provides a scale model, which, through its simplicity and ruggedness will be suitable for regular use throughout the year.

Considerable research has gone into the model over 12 months and the usual vices of scale models have been eliminated. The structure has been designed with considerable respect to scale detail; all the ribs, stringers and outlines are true, as are the U/C, cowl and external features. It should be noted, however, that this model is not suitable for beginners to fly.

Most engines from .40 to .91 cu in can be installed without difficulty and we feel sure that you will be proud of your finished model and enjoy its smooth-flying qualities. For the connoisseur, a 4-stroke motor whether glow or spark ignition will enable a scale-size propellor to be installed which would normally be too large for a faster 2-stroke motor.

The die-cut parts have been prepared to the highest possible standards of accuracy to ensure trouble-free speedy assembly. Remove each component when required very carefully from the diecut panel with the aid of a modelling knife or similar, do not force the pieces out or damage may result.

Identify each die-cut part in turn from the layout sketch drawn on the plan. Check the contents of the box against the parts list and identify the different sizes of strip balsa. The kit contains more than enough of each size with some to spare in case of a few mistakes. All joints should be made with white wood glue (PVA) or balsa cement except where noted. Place a sheet of clear plastic film over the entire plan to protect it from the glue.

Do not force pins through any strip wood; this will split and weaken the structure. Hold the strip in place over the plan with pins on either side in a zig-zag manner as shown on plan detail. Wider components such as wing tips and trailing edges may be pinned through without risk of damage.

A flat board approximately 49 inches (115 cm) wide will be required on which to assemble the model, but no special tools beyond those normally found in a household tool box.

Large blue prints such as those in this kit sometimes stretch a little when printed, and under humid weather conditions, the ambient moisture can also cause the paper to expand. The position of the wing and tailplane spars and leading, and trailing edges may therefore not exactly correspond to the notches in the ribs. In this event alter the position of the strip to suit the ribs. DO NOT try to alter the ribs to fit the plan.

Before building commences read instructions throughout at least twice in order to become fully conversant with the parts and assembly routine.

Fuselage: Pin fuselage side part 1 position over plan. Glue parts 5, 6 and 7 in place and pin down to plan. Part 5 must be scarph joined as shown X - X on plan. Cut parts 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 to length and glue in place. Cut part 14 to shape from 6mm sheet and glue in position followed by parts 15, 16 and 17. Mark positions of parts 3, 4, 18 and 19 on the fuselage side. Place a sheet of clear plastic film over the right-hand fuselage side which should be left pinned to plan and construct the second side in exactly the same manner as the first. This procedure of building fuselage sides on top of each other ensures that they are identical in every way..."

ScaleType: This (oz14309) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Tiger_Moth
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Splendid plans for a beautiful subject!

Chicken or the egg? Interesting that Premier used the exact same cover art as found on the Matchbox 1/32 scale PLASTIC Tiger Moth.

Plan page 1 has a small inset box in the lower left corner which appears to have formers, if anyone can enlarge it to the proper size.

Hi, just wondering if you can add what size paper to print these pdf plans to? Gratefully,

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
