Quote: "Lublin R-XIV, by Bill Noonan. One of those designs that gives aesthetic pleasure as well as a feeling of confidence at that critical moment of release.

HERE IS A handsome, well proportioned parasol design that you won't often see at your local flying field. The model is not difficult to build, and provides much in the way of an easily adjustable, forgiving design.

The R-XIV design started in 1926 with the laying down of the R-X (R-10) scheme. By the time production started, the aircraft was designated R-XIII, and there were many variants, of which the R-XIV is one.

The piane was designed by Jerzy Rudlicki, a highly respected and ingenious Polish engineer, who was trained in France at the Paris Aeronautical College.

About 225 aircraft of the R-X series are thought to have been produced from 1931 to 1938. Praised for being docile and easy to fly, the design also distinguished itself as an easily maintained and rugged airplane, some even taking part in skirmishes during the early part of World War II.

The R-XIV Advanced Trainer differed from other 'R' models in that it had an abbreviated turtleback and distinctive vertical stabilizer. ft was powered with a Wright J-5 Whirlwind engine or any number of European counterparts.

Our model was developed from information supplied in the old Profile Publications Series of aircraft booklets: If you have access to these little gems, they provide a wealth of information about color schemes and other detaiis that contribute io a realistic scale model.

Fuselage Construction: Before starting any construction, it is a good idea lo protect the plans from surplus cement by covering them with waxed paper or plastic wrap. Lay 3/32 square medium balsa longerons in piace over the side view. Don't stick the pins through the balsa, instead place them so they align and outline the balsa. Carefully cut and set in the hard square balsa uprights and diagonals. The uprights at either end of the longerons are 3/32 square. Apply cyanoacry late glue to alt joints. Make a right and left side in this manner.

The difference in dimensions between the longerons and uprights prevents the tissue from contacting the structure and results in a better looking covering job later on. This difference also allows the 1/32 ply reinforcing gussets at strategic stress points to be easily set in, flush with longeron sides.

When the sides are completed, cement the taii posts together, making sure the fuselage sides are parallel. The best way to assure this is to invert the structure so the top longerons sit on a flat surface. Add cross pieces, working your way forward. Check contours against the top view. Note that the longerons are pinched at the nose. This allows for the two side stringers to intersect the firewall..."

I previously had this plan listed as being from MB, my mistake. Thanks to theshadow we now know this plan is from MAN, September 1982. If anyone has a copy of that issue to hand and can scan and submit a clearer version of the plan, that would be great :)

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
