About this Plan

Caproni Ca3. Free flight scale model of the Italian WWI heavy bomber. Scale is 1/24.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Update 8/10/2022: Added article and pics, thanks to Pit.

Quote (google-translated from the Italian): "A Roman modeler sent our Carbini some photos of my free-flying Caproni Ca3. Our keen secretary liked it and he gave me a night to send him more information, as the newspaper would go to print tomorrow. I have always had a passion for free-flight reproductions and the Ca3 has always fascinated me.

About ten years ago I bought the design from SAMS and, until the end of last year, I never had the courage to start it. I don't think it's a 1950s drawing, but since it is liked, that it's all balsa and paper, that it's an important plane, that fought in the great war, that this year is the centenary of the end of hostilities, I believe that in our newspaper can stay there.

The design is spartan and essential but the construction is remarkably complicated: very thin structure, plenty of tie rods and uprights, two fuselages, three fins, a lot of wheels, etc.

They are 82 cm of wingspan for a total of 81 ribs 9 cm long and 6.5 cm high. It has four protruding side members placed flat, two below and two above (superimposed). For the two rear ones, after making the notches for their housing, 2 mm of thickness remain in the rib, I have not counted how many I have broken. I have made some simplifications and omissions but nothing relevant and some details are still missing.

The livery I found in no.6 of Agostini's "Aviation Great Illustrated Encyclopedia". Apart from the lighter color, it is that of the plane that is said to have brought D'Annunzio to the bombing of Kotor. Finally, the writing on the fuselage (which I still have to do) reads "unus non sufficit orbis", "one world is not enough" (for young people who have not studied Latin).

The two propellers I made four-blade balsa, counter-rotating with free release.

The weight is 72 grams, without the two rubber bands in the fuselages and the overall surface is 18 square centimeters (yes I know that when calculating the load it is necessary to remove the percentage of interference between the two wings)!

Do you want to know how it flies? ... I don't know, I'll try it in spring in a soft meadow of tall grass, hoping that the farmer doesn't notice.

A beautiful plan! Hand-drawn, clear and uncluttered mainly because of the absolute lack of construction detail, like formers, ribs, etc., but these can easily be worked out by the keen enthusiast. :) All lettering was patiently done one-by-one using templates, curiously with the occasional typo and spacing irregularities, but that's irrelevant, what matters is this is one great plan for a great subject :)

Attached build article and photo of my friend Maurizio Sagnotti and his Caproni [pic003]. Maurizio built it for rubber power. Too small propeller due to fuselage side distance, I would suggest modern electric propulsion.

The Ca. 3 gained additional world fame in recent times for featuring in Hayao Miyazaki's magnificent anime 'Kaze Tachinu' - 'the Wind Rises', when Jiro Horikoshi (designer of the A5M, A6M 'Zero' and J8M Raiden) meets his idol, Count Caproni, in a dream that sets his direction in life. On the wing of the Ca. 3 , Caproni confides that 'Aircraft are not about making money, or war. Aircraft are beautiful dreams, made real by people like me - aircraft engineers'.
In wonderful news, there is a replica Ca. 3 extant, and film is available to see it take flight here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh0yt_EytNY&ab_channel=DanieleBeltrame

Roger Teagarden asked me to commend the builder of this model for him, he says it's very impressive.

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
