My KK Snipe from 1964, with Mills 75 [more pics 003]
David Wright - 10/02/2020
Here's a couple of pictures of my plan-built 'Snipe', completed just ahead of the 2020 lockdown, but as yet unflown [main pic, 007,008]. Hopefully, that will be later this year - but who knows! An early D.C. Merlin provides the power and the all coloured-tissue scheme is a nod to my elder brother Peter's original (see third picture), which he built from the KK kit and flew very successfully in 1963 when he was just 13 and I was nearly 9. Sadly, it was lost - complete with its A-S 55 (especially tragic!) - never to be seen again.

The KK Snipe was my first free flight power model, also 1963 (or 64?), when I was 13. Powered with a Baby Bee it flew just nicely "off the board" with a gentle climb. But the wings folded when hand launched into a string wind, and that was that. The wing spars were of too soft wood and I didn't know enough to change them! Great looking plane, I painted the fuz black (heavy colour dope back the), with the rest just doped tissue followed by glossy Humbrol "hot fuel" proofer.

Very nice model, I have built two previously, both flew well. One thing re the construction, the two formers that take the engine bearers are specified as 1/8" balsa. they obviously need to be replaced with or laminated with plywood. both my Snipes ended up with the front caved in after tipping on their noses after landing

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
