Quote: "Good morning my friend, I've been helping a novice flier/builder with her first balsa airplane. She's a professor of Mechanical Engineering at a local university and is absolutely smitten with learning to build and fly. So I developed a 42 inch Ugly Stik Trainer with a semi-symmetrical airfoil (Clark-YH) and 8 degrees of dihedral (4 each side). Throughout the build, I'd show her how to do a step, and then let her 'do the rest'. It was fun to watch her learn. The biggest challenge was the covering, but she managed a pretty good job.

I got to know her when I mentored (3) engineering students with their senior project back in the spring, it was obvious that she wanted to learn to build and fly, one thing lead to another, and now she has a very flyable trainer. I think 'giddy' is the right word to describe how she feels about the build, and if you think about it, the Stik is the best possible airframe to teach. I can only hope that Phil Kraft is smiling.

It's pretty much a Coachman (oz1302) or a Fledgling (oz4117) with a longer nose, but with Stik ailerons and feathers. We bound the aircraft to her transmitter this morning, and she wanted to go and fly it right then. Patience grasshopper, we'll fly it soon. I chose the airfoil because it has such a low Reynolds number and high Coefficient of Lift at stall airspeed. She should be fairly well behaved."
