Voltimer (oz13767)
About this Plan
Voltimer. Radio control sport model, for electric power with 400 motor.
Direct submission to Outerzone.
Quote: "The Voltimer was one of my early forays into electric powered sports r/c models. It was drawn up and the prototype built and flown mid 2001. It comprised old-time stick balsa and tissue construction methods and was a very nice all-round performer. Somewhere along the line the plans and a construction article were intended to be published in the now defunct RCMW magazine as had occurred, before and later, with sundry other of my sport model designs. However, that never happened with this model. The reason was mentioned in your listing for my Kereru (oz13202) model, but I will repeat it briefly here:
Friend, (late) Brian Borland, called past my home for coffee and a yarn on his way down to the NZ Nationals at Claireville, near Wellington, between Xmas 2001 and the New Year. I had several models on the garage floor being photographed for RCMW magazine at the time. Brian mumbled something about wanting a model to kit and grabbed this one despite my unsuccessful protest. The result was that this 'Voltimer' model appeared as an 'Airsail' kit some months later. Brian never even gave me a kit, but then I never paid for any further model supplies from Airsail either.
I understand that it was a popular model, and Airsail organised some form of ongoing flying competition around it as a promotion measure. However, I never got involved in any of that, and pursued my own involvement in other areas of the hobby and it all just faded away... This was the only one of my designs which was ever kitted and in retrospect I'm sorry I never acquired one just for old time's sake. My Kereru design was hurriedly drawn up and submitted to RCMW as a substitute.
My pair of hand-drawn pencil drawings submitted to you here came to light recently following a house move. Unfortunately I had lost all my digital pictures etc when my unprotected PC crashed about five years ago so no pics there ... On a whim, last week I lodged an obscure request on our local RC Trader website to see if there may be any relevant information available. I was gratified to receive a couple of very helpful replies within a couple of days.
Gerry, in Tasmania supplied several pics of his existing model [pics 003, 004], together with a pic of the box label [pic 005] and the CAD drawn kit plan title block which I have forwarded to you. He also has an unopened kit and will send me his original kit plan. Martin, in NSW, sent me several pics of his well-worn silk-covered model [pics 006, 007]. He has also recently purchased a little-used completed model and has undertaken to send a pic or two of that when it arrives.
I have attached several pics which both Gerry and Martin have sent to me and also a very low-resolution pic of my prototype flying [pic 008]. This pic taken from a 6" x 4" colour print in an old photo album I recent found. Feel free to use any of this as you may see fit. Alan W"

Hi Steve and Mary, Once again, many thanks for the best website on the planet. I bought a Voltimer on a clearance sale 15 years ago for R100 (5 Pounds). I somehow cannot use the supplied parts and wood, so I cut my own and scratch build. The Volty suffered the same fate. I've build 5 now. Nothing super special compared to other similar planes, but is is still a wonderful aircraft. It came with a geared Graupner 400 motor. But a 400 size brushless makes it a rocket. In South Africa, particularly in the very late afternoons, the wind generally dies down and is accompanied by the most beautiful sunsets. This has always been my favorite time of day to fly the Voltimer. It's as smooth as silk. Few feet off the deck at 1/4 throttle, awesome. When covered with transparent film, it really does look good. I've included a few pics [009-012]. Kindest regards,Brian Moose - 16/04/2022

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
