About this Plan

Tom-E-Boy. Radio control sport model for electric power, with Speed 400 motor and gear drive.

The original Tomboy (oz285) was a Vic Smeed FF design at 36 inch wingspan, published in Aeromodeller, Nov 1950. This here is an enlarged later version at 42 in wingspan, for electric and RC.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hi Steve, Please find attached herewith copies of an old pair of drawings I unearthed in the workshop over the weekend. These are dated November 2001. Subject is 'Tom-E-Boy', an unashamed close copy of the famous 'Tomboy'. My model was enlarged all round with a wing span of 42". It was designed specifically as a 3-function r/c model for electric power which was reasonably new to us down in the colonies at the time. The prototype performed very well as you can imagine, and these drawings were submitted to RCMW around that time.

RCMW were enthusiastic and the plans were published, I guess sometime early in 2002. Within about 4 weeks I received an anguished communication from RCMW. Apparently Vic Smeed took umbrage with this publication and the plan was withdrawn pretty quickly - and that was the end to it all.

I don't recall what happened to my prototype but I guess it was sent off like most others. I fly them for a while and being an avid builder with limited storage facilities, then move on to other projects. Going by the date, I would have been been retired for 3 years then, and we since moved house four times in NZ and now four times in Australia - five of those moves involving building new homes designed by my wife and myself.

The original drawings, pencil on A1 tracing sheets, are in pretty good condition and I think would copy well. Now that Vic Smeed is no longer with us, and RCMW is defunct, I can organise a PDF copy and forward them if you are interested. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a copy of the relevant magazine. Regards,"

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
