About this Plan

Hawker Sea Fury. Radio control scale model fighter. Wingspan 48 in, wing area 2.9 sq ft, for electric power with Graupner Speed 600 8.4V motor. Scale is approx 1/10.

Discontinued kit from Model Designs.

Planfile includes all printwood and full build instructions.

Quote: "All woods are balsa wood unless otherwise stated. Unless stated, all sheet should be a medium-light grade, stripwood a medium grade. Liteply is a lightweight 3-ply material available in 2 and 3mm thickness. It can be cut easily with a stout modelling knife. Unless stated otherwise, cyanoacrylate adhesives are used throughout.

Wing Centre Section: Laminate main spar from 1/8 sheet and 0.4mm ply. Join lower 1/16 sheets together and cut to profile shown, allowing for an overlap at the LE. Mark off onto the sheeting the positions of the ribs and spar using the marks outside of the panel shown on the drawing. Glue spar in position followed by rear of ribs W1 to W4. Ensure all are upright. Glue front of ribs W1 to W4 to spar and fold sheeting up from building board onto ribs, gluing to the front ribs. Glue to the lower sheeting and front of ribs the 3/32 false LE. Add the 3/32 wing bolt spreader, servo bay lining and 3/16 TE pieces. Add W1A's and drill for the 3/16 wing dowel. Remove from board and trim back the LE sheet overlap.

Wing Outer Panels: Prepare lower sheeting as above, cutting to outer panel profile. Mark off onto the sheeting the spar and rib positions. Pin sheeting to board and butt-up to it the centre section panel packed up to the give the correct dihedral. Glue spar in position followed by rear of ribs W4 to W10. Glue front of ribs W4 to W10 to spar and fold sheeting up from building board onto ribs, gluing to the front ribs. Glue to the lower sheeting and front of ribs the 3/32 false LE. Add W7A, 1/16 sheet between the aileron ribs and 3/16 TE pieces. Remove from board and trim bock the LE sheet overlap. Repeat above for second outer panel.

Completing Wing: Fit bellcranks and pushrods. Pin centre panel to board and glue upper sheeting in place. Pin root of outer panel to board and pack under tip with washout setting piece, supporting remaining panels with packing. Glue upper outer panel sheeting in place. Repeat for other outer panel. Add LE and tips and sand complete wing to shape. Remove ailerons and face with 1/8 sheet. Drill for wing bolt and add wing dowel.

Fuselage: Build battery box from B1, B2, B3, B4 and F2A. Slide on F2 and glue F3 in position. Draw in rear of battery box and add F4. Add upper and lower 1/8 x 3/8 stringers. Glue to basic fuselage side the 1/8 x 3/16 longerons, making sure they are opposite hand. Glue basic sides to battery box assembly, joining at rear with the 3/16 x 3/8 sternpost.

Add formers F5, F6 and F7 and upper and lower 3/16 x 1/8 rear stringers. Install elevator and rudder pushrods and tube for RX oriel. Cut-away basic fuselage side overlap at rear to meet stringers and add soft 1/4 bottom sheet. Add lower front 3/32 sheet, joining to basic sides and stringer. Cut-away excess sheet to form wing seating using battery box lines to sand to.

Add wing bolt strap and with fuselage in place on wing and aligned glue to the wing the 1/16 x 3/16 location pieces, butted-up to the inner battery box sides. Drill for wing bolt. Cover wing with polythene and with fuselage in place glue to fuselage the 0.4mm ply wing seat. Add the 3/32 cockpit F1oor between F4 and F5. Glue to the basic fuselage sides the upper 3 wide sheeting.

Dampen the outside with water and glue to the formers as it is formed around, joining at the front over the 1/8 x 3/8 stringer. Trim off excess material F1ush with the upper rear stringers and add the upper rear soft 1/4 sheet. Cut an approximate cockpit opening and plane and sand the fuselage to shape. Mark out from the canopy and cut the finished cockpit opening.

On the fuselage centre lines add pieces C1, C2 and C3 followed by F1. Wrap with two layers of 0.4mm ply, overlapping onto fuselage sides and over F1. Add a 3/16 wide band of 0.4mm ply to inner overlap at F1. Cut front cowling to marked line and glue to fuselage front. If necessary, 'crack' inwards the 3/16 band to allow fitting. Cover wing with polythene and bolt fuselage in place. Construct wing seat fillets.

Tail Surfaces: Make from 3/16 sheet. Check working of the elevator horn/pushrod and that the tailplane is accurately aligned. Glue tailplane in place followed by lower block infill. Add fin and fin/tailplane fairings.

Finishing: The protoype was covered in Antique Litespan and given two thin coats of dope. Hinge all control surfaces and 'dry-run' the complete installation. Give the cockpit bay two coats of dope and paint inside. Add pilot and glue canopy in place. At this stage the model can be test Flown! Having returned the model back to the workshop, apply the paint and markings. These were all brushed on using Humbrol matt enamel paint, two coats applied sparingly. The roundels are marked out with a pencil compass and serial numbers by cutting out the stencils and drawing around them."

ScaleType: This (oz13711) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Sea_Fury
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
