Star 13 (oz13701)
About this Plan
Segelflugmodell Star 13. Radio control towline glider. Wingspan 3400 mm.
The Star 13 sailplane was designed in 1943 by Karl Heinz Stadler, of Nuremberg. This here is a modern reconstruction, re-drawn completely in CAD, by Matthias in 2021.
There was a (very brief) article about the original Star 13 in the 1948 Aeromodeller Annual, see supplement file.
Quote: "Star 13 is the latest design by KH Stadler of Nuremberg, and is a development of a similar model built by his brother George in 1943, for which a distance record of 19 km was claimed. Unusual in German models fuselage is multi-stringer to a semi-streamline shape, with high mid-wing wing location. These taper elliptically and favour RAF 32 profile. Tailplane is symmetrical. Incidence settings are mainplane 2.1° positive, tailplane 1° negative.
Performance: Average time from normal 328 ft towlaunch is from 3-5 minutes. Best time recorded for the model is just over 21 hours, when it travelled a distance of 12 km. Showed up well at Stuttgart and Dortmund Contests - and may be described as outstanding of post-war models."
Direct submission to Outerzone.
Quote: "Dear Steve, I started with the design in October 2021 and finished in December so I had a box under the Xmas tree and began 1st week in January to build. Maiden took place 6 March 2022. This was only possible because other projects were seized up.
At present there are 2 models, one is mine, already flying and one in the hobby shop of Michael, see on of the fotos ;-) he will fly later this year, but today he made the nice air shots at our local hill, thanks to Michael!
All the dxf files are here, should give ambitious rebuilder a chance, will be nice to hear if anyone builds it.
I added some pictures of the building [see photo pack zip].
Cheers, Matthias"

Note the main planfile here is a single PDF file with 16 sheets. This serves as a quick overview. For a more detailed (itemised) view, see the supplement file "named_sheets.zip" for the same plan, but here each plan sheet has a title of material and size. Then of course there is the full CAD file download in DXF format. Steve.

Nice one :)Hubert - 21/03/2022
Hi Matti, I have both positive and negative comments about this. I'll start with the negative: the music in the video is not really to my taste. As for the positive, I don't even know where to start. You picked a beautiful original and went on to recreate it in such a technically brilliant way, with careful design of all the traditional materials components. I could go on and on but whatever I might write you would only say "I know, I did that on purpose, dummkopf!". Congratulations, and thank you!

It should be noted that the name "Star" probably means the bird "Starling" and not the astronomical object. This is a classical "false friend" when dealing with German and English. :D
Martin - 23/03/2022
Yes the musik ;-) sorry. The plan was not to publish this film hope there will be much better one in future and better pictures. This film was only for friends and family but as I liked to publish in time this is a quick and dirty first view ;-).
Flying the star is wonderful its like having a build in thermal in the wings due to modern lda profile.
Miguel the star / german bird is a new biew on the project that opend my mind i was thinking if the org name should be stern but glad i took the original name i shoul grab a shilouette of a star and poo it on the Rudder that would make sense ?!?!
Thanks for all your comments cheers Matthias

Hi Matthias, this model has superbly clean lines, a true beauty. I would not add anything that tries to "embellish" it.
Cheers, Martin
Martin - 24/03/2022
Yes Martin so think I! There will be a new video soon from todays flying at local hill and expecially for Miguel super relaxing Musik ;-) that fits better to this plane!
Cheers Matze,
PS.: The best flights are still in front of us!
Matzito - 25/03/2022
Matze, I raise an imaginary toast to you: not only you are a first-class designer/builder, you have a refined sense of humour as well. For a model of this class, I would recommend Schubert's "Die Forelle". Smooth, elegant, and unexpectedly agile ;-)
Miguel - 26/03/2022
No Schubert but no Jimi Hendrix either :)) I maintain my other comments and would like to add that you chose a pretty landscape to fly in. Wishing you Happy Landings is useless, as it seems one would have to work very hard to do a bad landing in a field like this.

Hello, I was able to purchase an original Star-13 in Internet. It seems very old, perhaps even from the 50s. Attached pictures [pics 012-014]. By the way my father built such a glider in 1954 as he was 12. Now he was very happy to see it. With best regards from Germany,

My Star 13, from a Paco Model Hungary kit [pic 015] will fly again this summer. Yves, President SAM Belgium.

Hello Chris,
you have to come to our AMD Jahrestreffen, this year 40th anniversary of the AMD, into the Rhön in September, see https://antikmodellflugfreunde.de/termine-2/
Hi Yves,
the Paco kit is wounderful, I made some contact to Gabor, he is a very nice and friendly guy. Wounderful flights with your star 13.
cheers Matze

I have cut the star 13 from your cad plans. A few problems resolved in the fuse formers. Went back to the all moving tail plane, put a 1330 kV E motor 3 cell lipo, first comp rolled in 6th very pleased with that. The overall model is not a quick build very pleasing when its finished, flying is something else it does take a bit to master with easy tight turns in thermals landing its full on with no tip stalls at low speed. Very good model in thermals.
Vince - 21/07/2024
Hi Vince please share some pictures with us or if you have Film-link would be great, we all like to see. Hope you are happy with the plane, I flew mine in the last Rhön week in September of AMD, Antikmodellflugfreunde-deutschland.de @ 40th anniversary:

Thanks Mattias
When I can work out how to post some photos I will
At the present I'm building a Fillon champion for a fellow flyer then have another 2 to do, the fillon is a challenge to build, converting it to cad is time consuming, it is very similar to the star in the design and build

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
