Large, sometimes huge models seem to dominate the model flight scene. And yet, they are not at all suitable for enjoyable Sunday flying or some 'after-work rounds'. A model pilot prefers to be outdoors to fly for an hour, so on vacation, on an excursion somewhere on a small meadow. The large models are completely unsuitable for this. The smaller the plane, the easier it is to find space in the car and the less space it takes up to land, you can take off from your hand anyway.

With the 'Bienchen' I wanted to turn the large model euphoria a little on its head and examine how far one can reduce a model without making it particularly difficult to fly. The prerequisite is a light model, which means also a light RC system. And here I got the smallest and lightest there is, namely the RC system 'Cannon', which is manufactured in the USA / California.

The receiver, including the connector strip and antenna, weighs 20 g and is 22 x 16 x 40 mm in size. The servos, 25 mm long (with mounting bracket 34 mm), high 28 mm and 12 mm wide, are called CE-9 Super Micro and weigh a whole 13 g. In the tiny housing is the servo-stronger, a small motor with 10 mm diameter and a plastic gearbox, there was no space left for housing screws, so the upper and lower parts are held together with adhesive tape, which is completely sufficient.

In the model, the servos are attached with two screws. The actuating force is approx 1 kg / cm. Cannon supplies 250 mAh batteries for the receiving system, but they are too heavy in relation to the other components (65 g). I replaced the battery pack with four 150 mAh NiCd batteries, which with cable and switch only weigh about 38 g..."

Hello my Bienchen is fitted with a 15 g copter motor and 2s 350mA Lipo. The flight weight is 155g. The bee is so over-powered, otherwise flies well. Greetings,

Hello, attached you can find pictures of the two 'Bienchen' models I've built in the last two years [main pic, 008] for use on Outerzone. I'm a huge fan of the model since it was published in 1983. Back then, my bulky Robbe Futaba equipment barely fit into the fuselage and the model seemed to be too heavy even for my Cox Babe Bee. With modern lightweight equipment, the model is a delight. Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format.
