About this Plan

Cirrus Magic. Radio control sailplane model. Wingspan 3772 mm.

The original Graupner Cirrus (oz8532) kit dates back to 1969, and was 3 metre span. This here is a modern plan, drawn up from scratch in CAD, showing an enlarged version at 3.77m span.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Dear Steve, I redesigned a Graupner Cirrus in 125%, means enlarging from 300cm to 375cm. The Fuselage in 1969 was made from Plastic parts glued together with bad strength. This time the magic got a glass fiber fuselage. The original material for the Canopy in Ocean blue, I was not able to find anywhere, so I used normal 1mm Vivak. Good tips for sheets in min.600cm x 250 cm x 1mm are welcome ;-). A few things were modernized:

The Ailerons got an Aramid 30gr diagonal hinge at the very low bottom and a quarter circle so that they look like a fiber glass wing, very efficient low drag and the linkage was made "over-cross" to keep surface very low. First flights showed very good behavior on this. Another modern item is a flight control, that should not be used as supposed, but, as the original had no spoilers, my magic version should also have no spoilers. Once u lost it in thermal, up, up and away, just switch to coming home and the plane circles at home position and circles until you see it again, so it’s a security feature only.

When I draw the plans, I assumed that some people would also like to build the very first version with rudder and Elevator only. So for people who like that, the Ribs for the wings are drawn a second time on the plans without cutouts for Aileron stringers. In addition the Wing joiner should have 12° instead of 8°. Both are drawn, too. I include some photos in this email, there are a lot more.

See here for video of a short test glide from local hill:

Compared to the plan there are still all decals missing and I hope to get 'em soon and then make some more flying photos. Cheers, Matthias"

Note the main planfile here is a single PDF file with 15 sheets. This serves as a quick overview. For a more detailed (itemised) view, see the supplement file "" for the same plan, but here each plan sheet has a title of material and size. Then of course there are the CAD files in STP format, showing the moulded fuselage. Steve.

More excellent work by someone who knows what he does and loves what he does! Thank you, Matthias!

Very nice plane, also nice GFK work.

Lovely photos of a very attractive sailplane. I built the smaller version from the Outerzone plan and it is successful, although the built-up fuselage is a little 'boxy'. Still looks magnificent in flight.
Well done Matthias. Would you consider producing and selling a glass fuselage and canopy? I would certainly be interested.

I would also buy a fuselage if one were available for sale. This is gorgeous! I have an untouched original Cirrus kit but would rather build a larger one with a more robust fuselage

What a beautiful bird!

Thanks for you nice compliments. I brought the plane to the AMD meeting last week and few people were impressed but one said; wow thats the best for me during the meeting I have seen. Due to seeing it it was worth to come here. This compliment made me happy knowing to have create something that is of special interest. It was gold for my soul. Thanks Matzito

Sorry to say I cannot make commercial fuselage offers. If any interest I could sell the Urmodell so one might biild his own mould.

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
