About this Plan

Woody. Radio control sport cabin model. Wingspan 26-1/2 in, for Mills .25 diesel and rudder-only.

Quote: "I like flying my R/C vintage and scale models, but the sight of a tiny R/C model flitting about the sky is enough to raise the eyebrows of the most diehard modeller at any flying field. I acquired a Kemp 0.2cc Hawk motor and looked around for a suitable model for rudder only, but nothing appealed to me, so thought l would design a traditional cabin type model .with a target weight of 7 oz (200 grams) AUW. I fly a Cox Pee Wee powered rudder and elevator model that weighs 9 oz (255 grams).

I started building the model, but before I had finished, I found-that I couldn't make the Kernp run for more than a few seconds. The engine now resides in a private collection, so I obtained one of those nice little Mills 0.25 cc engines, which flies the model perfectly.

You will notice that the model has a large ruddder. Woody climbs fast and soon becomes very small, at which point, full rudder is applied to spiral the model down to a safe, more visible height. For normal flight, use small amounts of rudder to steer it round.

I use a GWS NARO micro receiver and have had no problems with rang. If you can see it, you've got control, but also be aware that thiis brand of receiver does not work with SANWA transmitters. l use a FUTABA challenger transmitter and I know that the GWS also works with Hi-TEC and JR.

Construction: The model is simple to build, nothing complicated. Anyone who has built a small kit rubber model will have no trouble; just remember to keep the construction accurate to the plan.

Begin by making two fuselage sides, one on top of the other ((separated with cling film or similar), using the 1/8 square and 1/16 sheet nose pieces.

I used good old fashioned balsa cement and epoxy for the bearers and undercar-riage. Glue on the 1/16 nose doublers then the 1/8 x 5/16 bearer spacers. When dry, epoxy in place the engine bearers to each side. Make Fl and F2 from 1/16 ply and sew and epoxy the undercarriage to F2.

F3 is simply built up using strip and sheet. Epoxy the bearers in place to 1/8 x 5/16 spacers and when both sides have been completed, add the 1/8 gussets and 1/16 x 1/8 diagonals and 1/16 sheet infills to tail. Glue on F1 and F3 to one side making sure these are square using a set square. When dry, glue on the other side, glue the tailpost in place and add the 1/8 square crosspieces.

I fitted a 7.5 cc metal team race tank behind F/A for longer flights, but usually fly it with the standard Mills tank.

Let in the 1/16 sheet under the cabin, on the underside, glue the 1/8 dowels in place and the thin acetate windscreen using balsa cement. The 1/16 ply servo plate can now be added after cutting out for the servo. I used a PERKINS servo, obtainable from any model shop.

Wings: The wing is built in three parts, centre sec-tion and two outer panels. Make the centre section first. Pin down 3/16 x 1/4 in leading edge, 3/16 x 1/2 in trailing edge, 1/8 square rear spar and main spar with dihedral brace attached..."

In pic 005 showing a plane with "ASDA" on the wing, is my good friend Norman Holme who sadly passed away 2 years ago. He taught me to fly 50 years ago and we have always been in contact. I am selling his model-making gear on behalf of his family. He was a regular visitor here wanting plans scaled up and down. If he built a model and liked it, he would get the plan done by me in several sizes for different engines. He had a massive engine collection that I am slowly selling on his behalf. He was a prolific model builder, I have here the last model he was building, a scaled-down Miss America, just the body and tail were built. I intend to finish it at some point for electric then show his lads Christopher and Craig, how to fly it. He worked at ASDA for a while and they sponsored that model for him. R.I.P Norman Holme, my good friend. Best regards,
