Navigator. Radio control sport seaplane model.
The original 52 inch Navigator (oz19) design by Don McGovern was first published in Flying Models June 1963. Then later kitted by Jetco, see Navigator (oz306). This here is a later redrawn plan by Uncle Willie, at 58 inch span.
Note this plan shows complete wing layout, and all formers.

User commentsPlease correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I remember 'Uncle Willie' being accused of irregular practices like redrawing and/or scaling up/down existing plans and then selling them on ebay and his own website as his own, with no mention of origin or authorship. I myself wrote to him in the past about some plan I wanted and he was less than friendly, later I understood some controversy was floating already. I don't know how that affair ended.

I think that sounds like a pretty fair summary. I don't think Uncle Willie is still with us any more. Certainly the William Miller Grumman F7F Tigercat (oz11894) plan he sold as his own work was a direct copy of the Paul Plecan design.

I bought a number of plans over the years from William Robertson (Uncle Willie) and they are nice plans and he was always up front about changes he made, usually to make them more complete plans or better models, like this version of the Navigator that has been scaled up a bit to make it perfect with a 15-size engine. I suspect it's like a lot of our cottage industry in this hobby; they start out doing if for themselves and then other people start asking if they can get a copy, so they make them available for sale. As Steve noted, Uncle Willie is unfortunately no longer with us. Today we can get a pdf and go to our print shop; it wasn't long ago that we had to order the paper plans.

Isn't it funny? Everybody was angry at Willie for being a pirate, but now we're grateful for his high quality preservation and restoration work. It makes you think, doesn't it?

Despite his apparent shortcomings, Uncle Willie drew the best plans to build from. He would take a scrunched up plan drawn to fit a magazine page and expand the drawing into a thing of beauty, so to speak. One page may wind up three pages but clear and concise.

William Robertson? Now I'm confused. I always thought Uncle Willie's name was William Miller.

I would like to add a note. Simon B. wrote above that "... this version of the Navigator that has been scaled up a bit to make it perfect with a 15-size engine...". That's the point, the overall dimensions may be different but this is not a simple scale-up. For instance in the original 52in plan the trailing edge is given as a 1in balsa profile and is drawn as such, and in Willie's version it is still given as the same AND measures the same 1.00", not 1.xxx"! To me this shows the plan was not rescaled, it was redrawn. This and the fact that the components layout is completely different, you have the engine silhouettes missing on the Jetco and MAN versions, etc, etc.
This makes me wonder why would he run risks with plagiarism or what looked so close to it, instead of designing his own originals as Willie appeared to be quite capable of.

I don't know how it goes with horses but anthropologically there are communities where families bring out the mummies of their ancestors for a celebration including banquets, music, selfies, all that, then they return them to wherever they came from till the next occasion. This happens in certain parts of Indonesia, and in Mexico they even take Gramps to the bullfight! They don't flog the mummies, though.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
