About this Plan

Silent. Control line profile stunt model.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Quote: "Hello Steve/Mary, I hope you guys are well and healthy! I am sending you a plan for a Japanese Stunter named 'Silent'. It was created and presumably flown by Tamotsu Nemoto. The plans use Metric measurements with a spattering of American Imperial measurements here and there, and of course wouldn't you know, it's in Portuguese!
Anyways, I thought this was a cool model. I do not remember where I got it from but thought it would be worthy to share this design.
The design and language should not present any problems to an accomplished scratch builder--ENJOY!"

Hi Steve & Mary, I looked up the Portuguese word 'Repocado' on the plan which means 'towed' in English. So 'Silent' really is silent as it is an engineless control line model!! I build whip control line models myself, and have a couple with elevator control, but nothing as fancy as 'Silent'. What a unique model!! Many thanks for this plan.

This is an interesting thing, a control line stunter with no power unit. The hook on the front is for towing (it says), but it can’t stunt on the tow line! I guess it could be bungeed and once airborne whipped around!

Funny, I did not notice that. Removing the IC tag now :)

Does that make this a CL Glider?

This kind of model are called "Whip-Control Models", very common in the 50's. Jim Walker too kitted a Whip model. I had a similar plastic model with free wheeling prop in my childhood. I've seen a uc stunt champion making 3 consecutive loops after engine stopped. He said the secret is to do it in a windy days and someone make a Nobler flying taking off with stopped engine just for fun. Simply running around like in an olympic 100mt contest.

It's better to fly whip models dressed like Zorro.

As a true-blue, dyed in the sheep Portuguese, this very much looks like a Japanese design published in a local "Control Line Technique" Jul'76 magazine. For some unknown reason it was then translated into an elegant Portuguese, Brazillian variant, finally landing in a cosmopolitan website.
It has no power system other than an athletic tow cable wallah pulling it, this cable being attached to that tow hook in the nose gear. It would be interesting to see a C/L slope soaring version of this fine model.

If anyone is interested in finding out more about Whip Control (a.k.a. Swing Control) see: https://www.hippocketaeronautics.com/hpa_forum/index.php?topic=1209.0
My posts are the most recent ones under SX976.

If you want to see this plane fly you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYbwc1Lq4Cc&t=8s At the beginning you will see a very nice plane. That is the original. Though the plane actually flies it is not showing the ultimate performance. It should fly even better with a better pilot and a better (windy) weather condition.

Outstanding. Many thanks, Ken. It stunts too - there was a loop!

I think that Pit is right on this one. It's not a conventional Whip Control model, but a Wind Powered model. I opened a thread on Ezone some time back to try and understand the physics of how they fly: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3334137
My classic Whip Control models cannot be launched like a powered C/L model, so the tow hook solution on the Silent is a novel idea. I assume that the model was towed up by an assistant and not by the pilot using a pole.

An old friend of mine, Jorge Homa (Brazilian of Japanese descent), who port this model in CAD. At the time he gave me a printed copy and I don't know if I still have it. What a pleasant surprise to have found this plant here in OZ, thanks GeorgeAlbo!!! :)

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
