About this Plan

Simple Sailman. Radio control sailplane model.

Quote: "Hello Steve & Mary, I have a Bowman Model Kits Simple Sailman 110 in 2 ch thermal glider designed by Dave Banham in about 1977, for your plans collection. The original dyeline plans had faded badly in parts and therefore I have had to re-pen those parts.

The second e-mail has supplementary items, such as photos of my electric version of the model I built this year, Bowman adverts of the period & a set decal I've created from the box art. Best Regards,"

Very happy to see this! I had one of these from the kit back in the early 80s and put many, many happy hours on it. Two suggested mods: 1. make the short wing outer panels detachable for transport; 2. double the polyhedral angle of those tip sections as otherwise it is very unresponsive to rudder. But great handling with extra tip polyhedral.

Simon, good news the outer panels are detachable, I was thinking of making the main panel in two parts, so it a 4 piece wing for easy of transportation.
I agree with increasing the polyhedral angle, rudder response is ok but could do with a little more. I may make some new out panels a little longer with more angle and take up 120”

What is motor, prop, ESC and battery are you using in the electric version?

Asimov, have a look at https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=13259 to see if you can find there the information you are looking for.

I had many pleasant hours flying my Sailman. I may still have the plan kicking around somewhere. Possibly even the box . Got mine from Bowman’s. Nice memories.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
