Quote: "Here it is, the Veco 'White Cloud'. According to the Vintage Radio Control Society records, this kit was released July,1960. It so happens, I have a VECO .19 R/C with the swing-up/-down exhaust baffle as shown in the drawings. Sort of looks like a mailbox flag. A newer K&B .19R/C will also be a good match. As you may know, K&B produced the VECO line of engines for quite a while. Good substitute. Plus, later K&B's will take a muffler with little effort.

Trouble is, only the fuselage side view is usable; remainder of the drawings are in the oblique. This was common practice during that time period, with the intent, of course, to prevent you from duplicating the kit on your own. Usually, everything else will be a best guess. However, it turns out Ace Radio Control of Higginsville, Missouri, not only produced radio systems, they also published a bi-monthly magazine titled Grid Leaks. In the Sept/Oct 1965 issue, they published a plan for the Curtiss Robin (oz4248) by Don Knaust. The first paragraph, under the subheading, mentions this Robin is a kitbash of the Veco White Cloud, and shows all of the construction needed to build an OX-5-powered Robin. Both plans even show wing rib lightening holes in the same location and a 'suggestion' for ailerons.

All you need now is to download both plans and set them side-to-side. Results, you can get the basic structure of the Robin, then compare the outlines with the Cloud, and you have all necessary information to replicate the White Cloud. Sneaky, no?"

Update 15/07/2020: Added 'fullsize' supplement, showing the fuselage side view from sheet #2, now scaled up to full size.

Update 16/07/2020: Added scan of the first advert for the White Could, from Man July 1960, thanks to RFJ.

It looks like a reduced/simplified version of Howard Bonner's Smog Hog. Often it was cited in oldtimers plans list in connection with Model Airplane News-July 1960. If someone have, please check. Pit

The only significance of the July 1960 MAN is that this was the magazine in which the first ad. for the White Cloud kit appeared.

Thanks, I checked in Nov 1960 MAN advertising and in the Veco page appeared full kit line. "Incidentally" Veco kitted the Smog Hog (oz671) too, so a reduced version for smaller engines is possible.

Added a couple of pics of finished model White Cloud found online [pics 006,007], thanks to Pit.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
