About this Plan

Kawasaki Dornier Komet D-5. Peanut scale model.

Quote: "14 inch span is legal. 9 inch OAL meets new AMA rules 93".

Quote: "The 1924 Kawasaki Dornier Komet, the first Japanese airliner. By Dave Linstrum. Ol' Dave reached deep into the obscure aircraft file to come up with this attractive and historic subject. Plans include separate patterns for the details and markings.

Back in the Roaring Twenties, both the aircraft and airline industries in many countries were in their infancy. In Japan, Kawasaki decided to build the proven Dornier Komet under license from the German designers. With its barn-door wing, voluminous boxy body and pilots out in the breeze (WWI technology), it was capable of carrying up to eight passengers. The newspaper 'Asahi' (Rising Sun) purchased J-BADA to use for the first airline in Japan. The aircraft's proportions make it a good Peanut subject, and with lots of simple detail on the silver airframe, it's quite pretty.

Take the magazine to a local copy shop and make two 11 x 17 photocopies of the plan - one to build on and the other for patterns and decoration. Tape the plan to a nice flat board and cover with waxed paper or plastic wrap. Work in a well-lit, uncluttered area. We like to listen to jazz while building but your favorite music may enhance your craftsmanship and pleasure.

Begin by building the fuselage sides one atop the other. We prefer Titebond or Elmer's carpenter's glue, but a good gap-filling CA glue is fine. When dry, separate the sides and box up the body over the top view. We use a small drafting triangle to keep the sides vertical as the crosspieces are added.

The wing and tail surfaces are simple. The curved tips are laminated from two 1/64 x 1/20- inch balsa or basswood strips around an overlength form. Soak them for five minutes in very hot water, blot dry on a paper towel..."

ScaleType: This (oz12097) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Komet
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Ah, that's nice. Have grabbed a still from that video, to use here as the main model pic.

If anyone is wondering who this "Jiroaerop" is, Jiro Sugimoto-sama is visible on his splendid website below. Approach as you would do to any other Living National Treasure of Japan, and use a translator if needed.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
