Westland Interceptor (oz12036)
About this Plan
Westland Interceptor. Free flight scale model for .049 power.
Quote: "The Westland Interceptor was a 1929 low-wing radial-engine fighter prototype which suffered from poor handling and, along with two other monoplane designs, lost out in competition to the Hawker Fury, a biplane.
This plan is for a 30 in free-flight scale, .049-powered, model designed by Hurst Bowers and published in the French model magazine M.R.A. (Le Modele Reduit D'Avion)."

Update 27/03/2020: Added article, thanks to Pit. Note this includes additional drawing of the tailplane.

ScaleType: This (oz12036) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.
If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.
Notes:
ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Interceptor
Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Hurst Bowers had a good reputation and a big portfolio but does anyone have any experience of this model? With its short nose, low wing, symmetrical aerofoil and no flexibility for wing mounting etc, it looks an unlikely candidate for a relaxed flying career. Has anyone built one as I would love to.Richard Falconer - 12/06/2023
The requirement for "relaxed" was toned down in order to conform to the actual bird, which seems to have been a real brick! See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Interceptor

Hi, I've looked at this plan several times and have come to the conclusion that it is in fact a control line model, the heavy construction, symetrical wing section and the total lack of dihedral all point to this the only part that's at odds to this is the CG at 50% totally wrong for C/L and even to far back for free flight!! maybe with dihedral and a more forward CG it could be made to fly free flight but it would never be a relaxing flyer.

I think you might be right Simon. In the article, after a short reference to the plane history, it says the following about the design (1st paragraph, 3rd sentence): "It seemed good to us to pull it out of oblivion because it is interesting to modelers, mainly for circular flight". HOWEVER... notice the use of the word "mainly". I think that they leave it "open" to the fact that it might be tried as a free flight also. For such, it is said further into the article that dihedral would be 3.5 degrees (or from 3 to 5 degrees, not sure). As to the CG, that might just be plain wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

Hi, First a thank you to RC Yeager for the translation of the french text, I can't read french but I did spot the words Vol Circulaire in the text which refers to control line flying.
I still quite fancy doing it free flight but I would replace the symetrical airfoil with something more suitable for free flight I would also make the wings removable for ease of storage.
When I was young I followed plans to the letter however good or bad they were now I tend to look at plans as a guide-line only and modify them to suit my own building techniques, one of my pet hates is wing tips & tailplane outlines cut out of flat sheet, It's just as quick to make laminated outlines & they are so much stronger.
Happy flying, Simon.

* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
