Quote: "Hello Steve! First of all: I really thank you for the work you do here! This database is a very fine and useful thing for so many of us 'Retro-nerds'. I'm busy as "jannicam" on the german "RC-Network" and there promote the oldie-meeting "Retro Nord" ;-). This is my first try to upload something to Outerzone.

I happened to get a very-very rare plan of the ALI, unfortunately it's been cut into pieces and folded several times, drawings in it - definitely not in good condition. I repaired the mess, and with the help of a good professional copyshop here in Hamburg I finally got a scan, that will be good enough to be used for building up this oldie again.

Here is some additional information about the model:

Hegi 340 Ali (first appearance in Catalogue MK6 1966). High-performance sailplane designed by Joachim Heise (several times German National Champion). Hegi writes about this model: 'An outstanding performer, both for slope-soaring and for towline flying over flat ground. It’s simple, rugged construction also enables it to stand the stress of aerobatics.' The text in later catalogue MK 9 says that the model won many prizes and can also be launched with a pylon-mounted engine.

Technical Data:
Wingspan: 2230 mm (88”)
Length: 1280 mm (50 ½”)
Wing area: 36.4 sq dm (564 sq in)
Tail area: 8.3 sq dm (129 sq in)
Total area: 44.7 sq dm (693 sq in)
All-up flying wight: approx 1000 g (35 oz) with radio
Area loading: approx 22 g per sq dm (7-1/4 oz per sq ft)
Up to 600 g (22oz) of radio equipment can be carried by the model

The real-existing model's photographer was Markus Schäfer [main model pic]. He allowed to use the picture, it would be kind to mention his authorship.

So long for now, and: Thanks again! Sincerely,"

Update 12/03/2020: Added Hegi catalogue page, and assembly photographs, thanks to jannicam.

Update 1/11/2022: Added airfoil dat zipfile, thanks to Martin Huebner.

Quote: "Dear Outerzone, many thanks for your great work with your excellent page! Please find attached the airfoil coordinates for Ali (oz12005). I digitized the airfoils from the plan and stored the coordinates in the common Selig format. For further calculations, i.e. with xfoil or xflr5, I've also smoothed the coordinates. Greetings from Germany,"

Dear Mary, I have attached a couple of photos of my Ali glider [pics 005, 006] built from the German Schuco Hegi kit. I know the second photo was taken circa 1974, the first some years earlier.
The first picture [005] was taken within Epsom Downs racecourse, the colour scheme portraying that on the manufacturer's box art.
I recovered the model and incorporated a removeable engine pylon of my own design with a small diesel engine (DC Sabre) installed to fly from a flat field.
I do not recall seeing another example of this kit either mentioned or reviewed in any magazine article, but it was a good kit of all built-up construction. Kind regards,

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
