About this Plan

Porterfield Collegiate. Small scale free flight gas model, for Cox .020 power.

Quote: "Collegiate, by Walter E Mooney. For simplicity and flight ability, the Porterfield Collegiate rivals the Cub. Powered by a 'baby' engine, it flies like a bird. ROG it and see!

Did you want a model with scale appearance, easy to build, and rugged enough to take punishment? If so, this model of the Porterfield Collegiate is a good choice. It also is quite cheap to build, and easy to carry around. It took me 12 hours to build.

It was designed around the Cox .020 Pee Wee engine and sized so that the propeller is scale diameter, but other new ultra-small engines can be used.

Porterfield produced a series of light two-place trainers and sport planes prior to the second World War. The Collegiate was the last of the line. It was powered with a 65-hp. engine and seated two people in tandem. The configuration was quite simple and its deep slab-sided fuselage and high wing make for a stable free-flight model with a minimum of design changes.

The model illustrated is the fifth one made. It has not been flown at this writing (I promised not to fly it till my wife Carole finishes her second one) but the other four flew right of the board. This one replaces my first, which flew out of sight. Carole's first one got run over by a car - it won't take that much punishment.

This is an excellent beginner's scale, free-flight, or sport model. For strictly sport flying omit the interior, jury struts, small details, landing gear bungees, and tail bracing. Separate surfaces may be omitted also. Although the main struts can be omitted also, I prefer to see them in place for scale effect even on a sport model.

Construction: For the most rapid assembly a set schedule should be followed. This is done to allow cement to get thoroughly dry before parts which need carving must be handled, thus preventing the frustration of having a laminated cowl come apart while being carved..."

    ScaleType: This (oz1186) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
