About this Plan

Aquila 1942. Free flight model. Italian 1940s model flying wing sailplane.

Quote: "Modella Integravito 'Aquila' per la 3 Classe della Scuola Media (compito per la vacanze)."

Note this is a modern redrawn plan. The scans were quite hard to read and very difficult to clean. Gene took these and basically redrew all the parts from scratch in 3D using CAD. This here is the result.

For some more background on this and Gene's work on it, see and onwards.

See supplement file for a copy of the raw scans Gene worked this up from.

Scan from KaoruKiyose, cleanup by rchopper56.

Direct submission to Outerzone.

Update 18/09/2019: Added dwg CAD files, thanks to Gene. Note there are 4 separate zipfiles.

Quote: "Hi Steve and Mary, I noticed that someone has asked for the CAD files for the Aquila. I do not see any harm in releasing them. I put all of them zipped in a folder and them zipped the folder. The zipped folder is quite large, hope it get's to you. My CAD is from the year 2000 so almost anyone with a CAD program will be able to open. They are all 2D dwg's. If they want the 3D, that is already posted at RCGroups as a ACI SAT file.

Note see for the ACI SAT file mentioned.

Update 11/10/2021: Added Aquila article (includes several great pictures showing detailed construction) and Aquilotto article, thanks to Pit.

Quote: "Finally I found construction chapter in Third Prof. E. Menestrina book for third class secondary boy's school of 13-14 years old summer exercise. Enjoy. The Aquilotto (eaglet) was a smaller tailless model - could be interesting to see Italian construction method. Pit"

Awfully good redrawing work on a most elegant original design. Any chance of having the CAD file as well?

CAD files added now, thanks to Gene.

Much obliged, Gene, this is a very complex and beautifully done work and I still have to see the 3D file!

Wow! Makes me want to buy a laser cutter....

In this photo of 1986 [pic 006] the modeller Giorgio Rabaglio with an enlarged and modified for RC Aquila of E. Menestrina. Rabaglio was the founder of "Gruppo Falchi di Bergamo", probably the oldest still active RC club in Italy, see

Should anyone decide to build from the cad drawings be aware that there is an error in the rib cad drawings.
The drawing shows a cambered section changing to a symmetrical then changing again to a Clark Y at the tip.
The ribs from the symmetrical section out should be inverted (the Clark Y should be upside down). This is to help create a stable model without too much reflex and washout in the structure.
If in doubt refer to the article pictures where it clearly shows the orientation of the ribs.
Also the TE is not a straight line when viewed from the rear.

When Gene was drawing up the cad plan, we did not have the article and pics. That would have helped a lot. It would have been nice if things had come along in a different order. But these are the breaks.

Just for information I'm preparing for Gene and OZ the english article translation For both Aquilotto and Aquila, at the same time I would like to share the "Gruppo Falchi di Bergamo" site page for downloading a lots of Italian aeromodelling books of the past (Menestrina's 3 books included):

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
