About this Plan

Fighter Glider. Sport towline glider model. Austerity design in Obeechi, birch and a bit of balsa. From Aeromodeller, January 1944. Plan is printed at 1/3 scale, with formers at full size.

Quote: "In the May issue of the Aeromodeller, Mr Jones stated that he preferred using his model Halifax as a tow-line glider. This set me thinking.

Elastic is hard to come by and balsa wood is even scarcer. A glider seems to be the answer. It is a well-known fact that a moderately loaded model glider is more efficient than a lightly loaded one, and here the use of harder woods becomes an asset. Again, the modern aircraft looks much better with its undercarriage retracted, and in this case of a flying model (unless some very complicated gear is used for lowering the undercarriage) the propellor is liable to be damaged.

Therefore, working on these facts, I prepared a layout for a freelance low-wing monoplane fighter glider. I was a bit dubious about a low-wing glider, unless excessive dihedral was used, but my fears were entirely unfounded, and the completed model glides as well as any pukka glider I have built, and looks far more impressive as can be seen by Mr C Rupert Moore's painting on the cover..."

The original plan can be found in post #4159 [of RCgroups vintage thread] along with the text and pictures of the finished model. My personal opinion is that the wings will fold at the dihedral break... especially if lauched with a Hi-start... no reinforcement. I redrew it because the original plan left a bit too much to the imagination, and it lacked the formers and airfoils... Also, some of the dimensions didn't work out. Also, I don't have the skills or software to clean up the original file.....and I can draw faster than I can edit a .bmp or .pdf. The aircraft seems to have been based on the Hawker Tempest Mk-1. I also have a 72" version of the aircraft [see more pics 005] that I'm building for the BBCC-2 contest. The drawings, with printwood, are posted on my build-log. Enjoy.... If you find something wrong, let me know. Measure twice... cut once."
