Black Arrow (oz1116)
About this Plan
Black Arrow. Free flight rubber model.
Update 11/5/2026: Added article, thanks to PB_guy.
Quote: "An unusual but easy model. Black Arrow, by WE Mole.
Fuselage: A full-size plan should be drawn of this and the two sides built on it in the usual manner, and then joined across by the cross members. All longerons and fuselage struts are of 3/32 sq balsa, and the first bay is filled in with 1/16 sheet balsa. Aluminium tubes are cemented through these as on plan to take the undercarriage fixings.
The wing supports are then added, these being four uprights of 1/4 x 1/8 in hard balsa, and which are slotted to fit over the cross braces on the top and bottom of fuselage. Where these project above the fuselage they are sanded to a streamline shape. Two runners of 1/8 sq balsa are then firmly cemented into place on the top of these by being let into a right-angled slot.
Mainplane: This is a simple structure, and is made in three pieces which are then joined into one. The first is the centre section, and consists of two ribs joined across by pieces of 1/16 balsa, as shown.
The main wings are then made, these consisting of 1/16 balsa ribs on two spars of 1/8 x 1/16 balsa, and with a in. x lir in. balsa trailing edge. The leading with a 1/4 x 1/14 balsa trailing edge..."

I'm finishing the build of this iconic '38 bird; I scaled it down to 21.5"w.s. in order to fly indoors in our low-ceiling gym. It went together well, adjusting for some plan mismatches. Covering will come next, then trimming at our gym. I fly with the Bedford Flyers in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas area.I'll try to post its flying ability later.

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.
Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
