About this Plan

Great Lakes Trainer 2T-1A. Scale model for control line of 1930s trainer.

Quote: "Full size plans and build-it data for a .19 to .23 powered flying scale model of the 1932 2T-1A Special Great Lakes Trainer.

For those control-line modelers who love scale models, we introduce one of America's favorite training planes of the early thirties, the Great Lakes 2T-1A. Several commercial flying schools used this trainer exclusively and a good many sport fliers owned the Great Lakes because of its beautiful flying characteristics.

The Great Lakes 2T-1A was manufactured under the ATC No. 228 by the Great Lakes Aircraft Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932. It is a two-place, open, land biplane, powered by the American Cirrus Mark III, rated at 90 h.p. at 2,100 r.p.m. Cruising speed is 90 mph, top speed 110 mph, landing speed, 40 mph, license number NC 856K.

In 1933, this model was rebuilt by the Minnesota Aviation Sales Corporation into a stunt plane for Air Show work. It was equipped with an inverted, flying carburetor and fuel system, heavier flying and landing wires, doughnut wheels, and fairings about the strut ends and the lower wing panel where wing and fuselage join. The front cockpit was covered. These changes raised the top speed to 120 mph and cruising speed to about 110 mph.

So much for the history of this plane, now let's build a winning scale model of this beauty from the full-size plans herewith. Fuselage: The frame is built up of 1/2in square medium-hard balsa. Build the two side frames and then cement in the cross members which are also 1/2in square. Leave out cross member 3. Cement the 1/2in plywood firewall in place, then the formers at stations C-C, D-D, E-E, and F-F. Next, cement in the 1/16in ply-wood rudder post. Now cut out the fin and groove the inside face of each piece so that they will fit together flat with the plywood rudder post sandwiched in between. Cement and clamp together. While this is drying, install the two hardwood engine mounts..."

Update 20/04/2017: Replaced this plan with a clearer copy on single sheet (also shows complete wing layout) thanks to dfritzke.

    ScaleType: This (oz108) is a scale plan. Where possible we link scale plans to Wikipedia, using a text string called ScaleType.

    If we got this right, you now have a couple of direct links (above) to 1. see the Wikipedia page, and 2. search Oz for more plans of this type. If we didn't, then see below.

    Notes:
    ScaleType is formed from the last part of the Wikipedia page address, which here is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes_Sport_Trainer
    Wikipedia page addresses may well change over time.
    For more obscure types, there currently will be no Wiki page found. We tag these cases as ScaleType = NotFound. These will change over time.

Notes

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
