About this Plan

Haltonian. Lightweight towline glider model.

Quote: "A Lightweight Glider Suitable For Beginners. Haltonian, by MA King.

THE Haltonian is a small, good looking sailplane that possesses an exceptional performance for such a machine. It is very simple to build, and all the materials, including dope, can be bought for 6s, a handy feature nowadays. Two versions have been built - a lightweight model as shown here, and an FAI machine with 1/16 in sheet fuselage and wing and tail LE. The performance is little altered, but the former is more suitable for beginners. Automatic rudder control has been fitted, but is not necessary, something that does not apply to the dethermaliser.

The average flight in fair conditions has been 3 min 10 sec off 328 ft lines. As a slope soarer this model shows particularly well, many flights of over 2 min have been logged with a best of 3 min 53 sec - surely not too bad for 34 in.

Fuselage. Taper the 1/2 x 1/8 side members at the front and cement formers 3, 4 and 5 to both. When dry cement together at the rear, chamfering down to mate well. Cement formers 6, 7 and 8 in place and then bend the nose to formers 1 and 2. The square top and bottom can be fitted now, together with the sheet that fairs the wing on to the fuselage. It may be necessary with hard wood to crack the 1/8 sq at formers 2 and 3 on top ; it is, of course, always necessary behind former 5. Sheet in back to 4 underneath, binding and cementing the tow-hooks well first. Make sure the hooks lie parallel to the fuselage as the climb on the line is very steep. The dowels should be added and weight packed between formers 2 and 3, then the cabin floor added to form a box for the weight. Add gussets, 1/8 in underfin and skid and make noseblock from laminated 1/8 in sheet..."

* Credit field

The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Currently, it is also used to credit people simply for uploading the plan to a forum on the internet. Which is not quite the same thing. This will change soon. Probably.

Scaling

This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
