The Ryan ST has long been a favorite of ours, for the lines of the full size aircraft lend themselves nicely to a scale-like U-control stunt model. Construction has been kept simple as possible; it should offer no difficulties to the average modeler.
Appearance-wise, the clean lines of the Ryan with its streamlined wheel pants and fairings, cowled-in engine plus twin open cockpits really make it standout at any flying site. As for stunting ability, the Ryan has proven itself to be a contest-caliber design winning the Palmetto Regional Championships and the King Orange Internats.
Study the plan carefully to familiarize yourself with construction. Begin by cut-ting out all parts. Note ribs W-4 are duplicated in 1/8 plywood. Bend landing gear wire and drill out 'J' bolt locations on W-4's. Do not bolt gear on yet. Drill holes in inboard wing ribs for leadouts. Pin trailing edge sheeting to plan, mark location of ribs. Pin spars to plan at cen-ter and block up at tip with 1/8 in scrap, mark rib locations. Run glue on trailing edge and pin ribs in place. Do not glue to spar yet. Add 1/4 in sq leading edge, check ribs for alignment and glue in place. Top spar is inserted and both spars tack-glued to ribs. Glue top trailing edge sheeting.
Glue doublers to fuselage sides. Glue motor mounts in place. Mark former locations on fuselage sides, glue 1/4 in tail spacer in place on one.
Check alignment, glue in F-2 and F-3. When dry, pull fuselage sides together, glue at rear. Install tank. We use 3.5 oz Veco re-vented as shown. Heat 1/8 in OD brass tubing until red hot to make bending easier, let cool and install in tank with good solder joints. Shim tank with scrap balsa, glue or fiberglass in place. Insert engine, offset 2 degrees to outside of circle, mark bolt locations and drill out. With engine in place, make nut plates from tin can stock and solder on nuts. Hold in place on mounts with small wood screws.
Remove wing from plan, check for warps. If any have developed, remove by twisting in opposite direction before per-manently gluing ribs to spars. Install bellcrank platform. Drill out for bellcrank bolt, install bellcrank and leadouts. It may be necessary to use two nuts under bellcrank to provide clearance for push-rod. I strongly suggest bushing bellcrank and control horns with 1/8 OD brass tubing, at least 3/16 long. Nothing is more disappointing than to have a good stunt ship fly poorly because of sloppy controls.
Bolt landing gear wire on; mark location of gear wire on bottom planking and drill a 3/16 in hole. Slide planking over gear wire, glue in place. Add top sheeting and sheet centre section, top and bottom..."

Notes
* Credit field
The Credit field in the Outerzone database is designed to recognise and credit the hard work done in scanning and digitally cleaning these vintage and old timer model aircraft plans to get them into a usable format. Scaling
This model plan (like all plans on Outerzone) is supposedly scaled correctly and supposedly will print out nicely at the right size. But that doesn't always happen. If you are about to start building a model plane using this free plan, you are strongly advised to check the scaling very, very carefully before cutting any balsa wood.
