Plan file details

Zipper. Free flight pylon power competition model. The original Zipper (oz387) was a Carl Goldberg design, from 1939. This here is a simplified 'home-made' version, from New Zealand. Quote: "This plan was drawn from a series of small photographs owned by Ira Pepperell, assisted by memory recall by Ira Pepperell and Max Allen, who was Ira's flying mate at Gore in in those days. Max remembers Ira finding a perspective line drawing in Air Trails (his favourite model mag) and building the model by eye without drawing a plan. There are several departures from the magazine sketch, including Ira's modified wing pylon attachment. In 1939, New Zealand was flying to a 45 sec motor run. With no flight timers available, Ira found that he could get the motor run within one second by metering the fuel in the tank. When the Pepperell family moved to Auckland around July 1940, Ira brought his Zipper out again, and a number were built by Auckland Model Aero Club members. Bruce Keegan built the Zipper, and recalls the necessity of cementing all the adjustments when once they were found. That done the Pepperell Zipper was a reliable contest model." Quote: "Here's a Zipper that I'm guessing hasn't been posted before. It's from New Zealand. I was cleaning out some files and came across an old AVANZ news letter, that had this scan with a nice story. After an hour or so of cleanup and re-scaling, here it is. It would interesting to know if this would qualify for SAM."
